Trump has no good options to resolve the disaster he created in Iran

April 3, 2026
Mitchell Plitnick
Trump faces a disaster of his own making in Iran. He had no plan to address Iran's predictable retaliation, including closing the Strait of Hormuz, but even if he did, he faces another problem: Israel, his disastrous choice for a partner in crime.

“The Institutions Have Not Collapsed”: Prof. Ali Kadivar on Iran’s Resilience to U.S.-Israeli War

March 30, 2026
As the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran enters its second month, President Donald Trump has said he wants “to take the oil” and seize Kharg Island, Iran’s key export hub in the Persian Gulf. President Trump’s comments come as 3,500 U.S. troops began arriving in the region on Friday, with The Washington Post reporting that the Pentagon is preparing for weeks of potential ground combat in Iran. According to a consortium of human rights groups in Iran, nearly 1,500 Iranian civilians, including at least 217 children, have been killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes. Iranian scholar Ali Kadivar says the increased targeting of residential areas, schools and hospitals in recent days shows that regime change is no longer the main goal, if it ever was. “These recent attacks on civilian infrastructure makes the war look more like a war on Iran as a nation-state,” says Kadivar, fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University and an associate professor at Boston College.

The Increasingly Dire Costs of the War on Iran

March 28, 2026
Pat Hynes with Anna Gyorgy
Economist Jeffrey Sachs calls the Israeli and American war on Iran the beginning of World War III, driven by a “madman” and know-nothing president unrestrained by “hollowed out” politicians and surrounded by “sycophants.” Some of the most cogent early coverage of the war thus frames this conflict for what it is:  a lawless, soulless, brainless killing or wounding of thousands upon thousands of Iranian children and adults and displacing millions.  An enduring menace to the global economy, this unnecessary and illegal war also pushes the world toward long-term environmental disaster.  You will not read or hear this brutally honest coverage in any weak-kneed mainstream media or discourse, but Informed Comment will always be honest with you.

Guest: Sayed Mohammad Marandi. Interviewer: Joe Lauria
For two weeks, Iran has been under relentless bombardment from the U.S. and Israel in a barbaric war of aggression rooted in a profound ignorance of the country they seek to conquer. Iran was no threat to the U.S. It was in negotiations with the U.S. for a nuclear deal when Tel Aviv and Washington attacked.

Thinking About the Unthinkable: Iran’s Grand Plan to End U.S. Presence in the Middle East

March 9, 2026
Michael Hudson
Iran and Donald Trump have each explained why failure to fight the current war to the end would simply lead to a new set of mutual attacks. Trump announced on March 6 that “There will be no deal with Iran except unconditional surrender,” and announced that he must have a voice in naming or at least approving Iran’s new leader, as he has just done in Venezuela. “If the U.S. military must utterly defeat it and bring about a regime change, or else you go through this, and then in five years you realize you put somebody in who’s no better.” It will take at least that long for America to replace the weaponry that has been depleted, rebuild its radar and related installations and mount a new war.
