Trump says Iranians 'animals' when asked why he would bomb power plants
5 seconds ago
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iranians are "animals," therefore bombing their civilian infrastructure like power plants would not be considered a war crime.
"How would it not be a war crime to strike Iran’s bridges and power plants?" A reporter asked Trump.
"Because they killed 45,000 people in the last month...they are animals," Trump said, referring to casualty numbers from a brutal crackdown on demonstrations earlier this year.
According to official figures, 3,117 people were killed - including protesters, security forces and bystanders.
Opposition groups say the real number is much higher. The US-based human rights organisation HRANA estimates at least 7,015 deaths, although other Iranian opposition groups abroad have said tens of thousands were killed.
Attacking civilian infrastructure is generally considered a war crime.

US and Iran reviewing ceasefire deal, reports say
2 hours ago
The United States and Iran have been presented with a plan for an immediate temporary ceasefire, according to media reports.
Citing an unnamed source, Reuters reported on Monday that Pakistan delivered the proposal to US and Iranian officials, where it is currently under review by both sides of the conflict.
Tentatively dubbed the “Islamabad Accords”, the plan outlines a two-tier approach: an immediate ceasefire followed by a comprehensive agreement to be finalised within 15–20 days.
“All elements need to be agreed today,” the source told Reuters, adding that Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, has been in contact “all night long” with US Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
Axios reported on Sunday that regional mediators were discussing the potential for a 45-day ceasefire that could pave the way for a permanent end to the conflict.
While sources cautioned that the chances of reaching even a partial deal within the next 48 hours are slim, the proposal represents a last-ditch effort to delay US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum. Trump had told Axios, “If they don’t make a deal, I am blowing up everything over there.”
However, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that despite Trump’s threats, Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for a temporary ceasefire.
The official cited Washington’s lack of readiness for a permanent ceasefire and added that Iran refuses to be pressured into accepting strict deadlines.

The official said that Iran has already given several Indian, Pakistani, Turkish and French ships passage permits.
The Iranian embassy in Malaysia posted on social media earlier on Monday that the first ship from the country since the war began has been allowed to pass through the strait.
Iranian officials also told Al Jazeera that Iran will “respond forcefully” to the targeting of its petrochemical facilities.

UN nuclear watchdog: Strikes near Iran’s nuclear power plant ‘must stop’
3 hours ago
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi has called for attacks on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant to stop, warning they “pose a very real danger to nuclear safety”.
Strikes near the operating plant “could cause a severe radiological accident with harmful consequences for people and the environment in Iran and beyond,” said the International Atomic Energy Agency in a post to X.
However, the statement failed to name the US and Israel as the forces behind these attacks and did not propose that any further action be taken.
The UN watchdog drew criticism earlier on Monday from Iran over its inaction over the attacks on the country’s nuclear facilities, which were hit again for the fourth time today.
In a letter to the IAEA, Iran’s atomic energy chief, Mohammad Eslami, criticised its “lack of decisive action”, saying mere expressions of concern were insufficient and “emboldens aggression”.

Two mountain ranges, two deserts, two seas: Iran’s geography is its greatest weapon
4 hours ago
As hundreds of US troops approach the Gulf in their transport aircraft ahead of a possible invasion of Iran, they may permit themselves a glance out of the window to the terrain below.
But military and political experts say that Iran's vast and complex geography mean a ground operation would come at a high cost to the United States and, once started, its direction and length would be hard to predict.
“If you look at the history of such military attacks, you’ll see that generally once ground attacks start, they are very difficult to contain,” Arman Mahmoudian, a research fellow at the University of South Florida’s Global and National Security Institute, told Middle East Eye.
Iranian experts who spoke to Middle East Eeye point to three main scenarios if a ground war begins: the occupation of Iranian islands in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, an attack on Iran’s southern coast, or an invasion through Kurdish-populated areas in western Iran.
There are serious dangers and difficulties associated with every one of them.
