Iran's repression of protesters, including with the death penalty, is unacceptable and intolerable, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday.

"What is happening today in Iran is unacceptable for us, Italy can no longer tolerate it," Meloni said in an end-of-year press conference.

If Tehran does not change its stance, Italy will consult with allies to take more effective action against the regime, Meloni added.

On Wednesday, Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani summoned the Iranian ambassador to Rome and told him his country had to stop executions and start a dialogue with protesters.

Iran says «enemy plots to separate the people from the authorities have failed»

Iran's government stressed Thursday that "enemies' plots to separate the people from the authorities have failed," amid a crackdown on protests since September over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, detained for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.

The Iranian Defense Ministry has stressed in a statement that "the wishes of the enemy will never come true" due to "popular support" for the "beloved institutions", as reported by the Iranian news agency Mehr.

He has also stressed that he will "spare no effort" to "produce defense power" and "maintain security". Tehran has denounced that the demonstrations over Amini's death have been stirred up by several Western countries, among them the United States and Iran.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard recently confirmed that more than 300 people have died since the protests began, in what was the first official toll since the start of the demonstrations over the death of Amini, a member of the Iranian Kurdish minority who was arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly. The figure is lower than the one provided by the NGO Iran Human Rights which points to more than 400 deaths due to repression by the security forces.

Iran warns window for JCPOA negotiations closing

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian warned that the window for negotiations to return to the JCPOA nuclear deal "will not be open forever," during a visit to Oman on Wednesday.

"The window to reach an agreement on the part of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not always be open. This window is open today, but if the opposite parties, especially the Americans, do not stop being hypocritical and the Westerners do not deal realistically, it is not clear that the window that is open today will remain open tomorrow."

"Our hands are not tied. If the Westerners want to continue their hypocritical and interventionist behavior, we will move in another direction," stressed the foreign minister.

Amirabdollahian noted that Oman had made "serious efforts" in pushing for a return to the JCPOA between the Western powers and Iran.

Western officials say 'no reason' to return to JCPOA talks

The statements by the Iranian foreign minister come as Western officials state that they are not interested in returning to talks concerning the JCPOA at the moment.

German Foreign Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger stated on Wednesday that his country sees no reason to return to the talks.

"From our point of view, there are currently no indications or reasons for a resumption of the Iran nuclear negotiations," said Burger, adding that Germany is focusing on supporting Iranian protesters.

Last week, US National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby told reporters that the US doesn't "see a deal coming together anytime soon, while Iran continues to kill its own citizens and sell UAVs to Russia."
