Scientists Who First Identified Threat of Microplastics Say World Must Now Act

September 20, 2024
Some of the key scientists who first informed the world of the potential damage being done to natural systems by microplastics are now calling for world leaders to take decisive action to curb the introduction of these polluting materials into the environment—and they hope the looming United Nations treaty process on plastics can be a key vehicle for progress.

September 19, 2024
A trio of human rights groups on Wednesday announced a new interactive initiative exposing what the coalition is calling a “Genocide Gentry” of weapons company executives and board members and “54 museums, cultural organizations, universities, and colleges that currently host these individuals on their boards or in other prominent roles.”

Water, War, and Women in Gaza

September 18, 2024
In late 2020, a report titled Saving Gaza Begins With Its Waterstated:
The water crisis in Gaza is a problem of daunting proportions, with grave implications for the more than 2 million inhabitants of the Palestinian enclave... The Coastal Aquifer from which Gaza pumps water is diminishing; but more dangerously, it is experiencing significant deterioration from seawater and highly saline groundwater intrusion, as well as sewage pollution.

25% of 95K Injuries inflicted by Israel in Gaza are “Life-Changing;” Require Medical Care that Israelis Destroyed

September 17, 2024
Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) – On Monday, Israeli bombardments killed 38 people in Gaza. Based on past experience, we can expect a majority of those killed to have been women and children — at least 21 and maybe more. Photographs and video coming out of Gaza show dead children being carried in burial shrouds. For intance, Al Jazeera reports that an Israeli bombardment of the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City killed 3 people, and that a child and a woman are among the dead. Several others were injured.

Israel is joining the first global AI convention, here’s why that’s dangerous

September 16, 2024
It is deeply troubling that Israel has been allowed to join the first global treaty on artificial intelligence (AI)—an agreement meant to regulate AI’s responsible use while upholding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. For 11 consecutive months, Israel has weaponized AI in its genocide in Gaza, deploying AI-driven surveillance and automated targeting systems that have inflicted devastating civilian harm. Yet, Israel is now celebrating its participation in this treaty alongside the U.S., U.K., and EU, after spending two years at the negotiating table and helping draft the first international AI treaty for ethical AI governance. This contradiction exposes glaring hypocrisy and raises serious questions about the international community’s true commitment to accountability.

Iranian Revolution and Islamic Regime

Much has been said and written about the Iranian revolution, which has been going on for four and a half decades. The Islamic Republic under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini came out of this revolution, and it has ruled and mismanaged all the country's institutions until today. People of Iran, the majority of whom voted for the Islamic Republic, are now so annoyed by this regime that they wish for its destruction every second. But there is no other alternative to replace this disgraced regime.

Israel’s Bloody Negotiations Strategy in Gaza

September 13, 2024
Fifty-two years ago, almost to the day, on September 8, 1972, I survived the first of many Israeli air and sea raids on my refugee camp in northern Lebanon. I was less than two hundred yards from the area across the river where a group of us young kids met every day, between 4 and 5 p.m., to play in the large field, swim in the river or in the Mediterranean Sea.

Russian missiles will soon strike US and UK targets, if Starmer gets his way

September 13, 2024
The first confirmed use of ATACMS, Storm Shadow or Scalp inside of Russia would provoke a Russian military strike against a western military target. We should step back from this new missile crisis and push for a negotiated ceasefire.

‘Everything around me was getting torn apart’: Israel commits another massacre in Gaza ‘safe zone’

September 11, 2024
Flashlights in the hands of rescue workers break the dense darkness over the sand in al-Mawasi, the tent encampment sheltering displaced Palestinians in Khan Younis. A group of men with shovels struggle to remove sand in the middle of a giant crater created by an Israeli airstrike on the Israeli-designated “safe zone.” In video testimony collected for Mondoweiss, rescue workers pull out half-buried blankets from the sand and explain that they are trying to dig people out of the massive crater that was caused by an Israeli airstrike.

The Morass of U.S. Middle East Policy was visible in the Harris-Trump Debate

September 11, 2024
ABC provided a transcript of the debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. I have some thoughts on the Middle East dimension:

Debate: On Gaza & Ukraine, Harris and Trump put 'America last'

September 11, 2024
Donald Trump and Kamala Harris not only proved last night that they have no fleshed out foreign policy visions of their own, but that they feel most comfortable pantomiming like they do, using bafflingly cartoonish language about each other, playing so fast and loose with history, facts, and figures so as to make the entire debate over what to do in Ukraine and Gaza absolutely incoherent.

Al-Mawasi attack: ‘People were torn into pieces, most of them women and children’

September 10, 2024
For three hours under the darkness of Gaza’s night sky, search-and-rescue teams dug bodies and survivors out of piles of sand. Eventually, they paused, exhausted, to wait for daybreak and see what else was left.

From polio to hepatitis: Gaza’s health crisis is a ticking time bomb

September 9, 2024
Polio. Chickenpox. Hepatitis. The threat of epidemics is looming large in Gaza, thanks to Israel’s deliberate destruction of the Strip’s healthcare and sanitation infrastructure. Left without clean water, sewage, waste disposal, and adequate shelter, the health of Palestinians in Gaza is rapidly declining. Children and the elderly are among the most vulnerable, and time is running out. The Real News reports from the ground in Gaza, speaking directly with sanitation experts and local mothers about the conditions Israel has created through its total war on the Palestinian people.
