Israeli forces have reentered Gaza on the ground, recently marching into the Netzarim corridor, which Tel Aviv was supposed to withdraw from as part of the ceasefire agreement
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on 26 March that Israel will continue to exert pressure on Hamas until the resistance movement releases all captives held in the Gaza Strip.
“The fighting in Gaza continues. The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release our hostages, the more powerful the pressure we will exert. And I say to Hamas: This includes seizing territory, and this includes other things that I will not list here,” the premier said during a speech in Knesset.
His comments came during what is known as the ’40 Signatures Debate,’ a meeting which can be called once a month by the opposition that Netanyahu is legally required to participate in.
During the session, Israeli opposition leader and former prime minister Yair Lapid said: “Mr. Prime Minister, while you were talking about your 'absolute victory,' there were sirens sounding in the Gaza envelope.”
Palestinian resistance groups have resumed rocket fire at Israeli settlements in the Gaza envelope since Tel Aviv renewed its brutal war against the strip, killing over 700 people in a matter of days.
The Israeli army said that of the two rockets launched from central Gaza, only one was intercepted by the Air Force, while the other fell in the Zimra area.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement’s Quds Brigades announced the attack as a response to the massacres committed by Israel against civilians in Gaza.
According to Save the Children, more than 270 children have been killed by Israel over the past week.
Israel renewed the war on Gaza early on 18 March after following through with several weeks of threats and obstruction of ceasefire talks.
Ceasefire negotiations in the Egyptian capital have fallen apart after an Israeli delegation rejected a new Egyptian proposal and left Cairo on Monday, according to sources cited by Al-Araby al-Jadeed.
“Israel rejected all proposals despite Hamas’s positive response to a humanitarian ceasefire proposal,” the sources said, adding that Tel Aviv is “coordinating with regional parties to exert maximum pressure on Hamas ahead of any new negotiations.”
Netanyahu’s comments at the Knesset echo those made by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz a day earlier.
“If Hamas continues with its intransigence, it will pay heavy prices that get higher and higher in the taking of territory (by Israel) and in taking out militants and terror infrastructure until its complete surrender,” he said.
As part of the renewed campaign, Israeli forces have reentered several areas of Gaza on the ground, including the Netzarim corridor, which Tel Aviv was supposed to withdraw from as part of the ceasefire deal.
