Tehran urges Washington to drop ‘excessive demands’ as USS Ford approaches Israel

February 27, 2026
Intelligence assessments have refuted Trump’s recent claims that Iran was working to build missiles capable of reaching the US
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on 27 February that Washington must drop its “excessive demands” for a nuclear agreement to take place, coinciding with a continued US military buildup in the region.
“Success in this path requires seriousness and realism from the other side and avoidance of any miscalculation and excessive demands,” Araghchi said in a call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty.
The call came as Washington’s aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, was set to arrive in Israel, following weeks of threats and a massive US air power buildup in West Asia described as the largest since the Iraq invasion.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack the Islamic Republic and has intensified sanctions on Iran, with the most recent being issued just hours before the latest round of talks.
Trump said a week ago that Tehran had two weeks to agree to Washington’s terms.
A new Reuters report citing intelligence assessments has refuted the US president's recent State of the Union remarks about Iran working to build missiles capable of reaching the US.
The report said his claims were “not backed by US intelligence” and were “exaggerated.”
Sources said they were “unaware of any US intelligence assessments that Iran was developing a missile that could soon range the US homeland.” US intelligence has also previously refuted claims that Iran was weaponizing its nuclear program.
The negotiations took place on Thursday. “We have finished the day after significant progress in the negotiation between the United States and Iran,” said Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi.
“We reached agreement on some issues, and there are differences regarding some other issues. It was decided that the next round of negotiations will take place soon, in less than a week,” Araghchi had said earlier.
He said it was the most “intense” round yet and that a “mutual understanding” was reached to “continue to engage in a more detailed manner on matters that are essential to any deal – including sanctions termination and nuclear-related steps.”
Hebrew newspaper Maariv reported that there were concerns among official Israeli circles that Trump would opt for a limited, nuclear-only deal to avoid escalation with Iran, leaving Tel Aviv exposed to Iranian missiles.
Yet other reports said Washington has stuck to its demands for Tehran to give up its enriched uranium stockpiles, and eventually address its ballistic missile program and support for resistance movements. Iran has refused these demands.
As tensions remain high, the Islamic Republic is warning that US assets and bases all across the region will be struck if Iran is attacked. Iranian officials have also warned that Israel will be a target.
The next round of negotiations will be held in Vienna next Wednesday.
