IRGC warns vessels against unauthorised routes in Strait of Hormuz
1 minute ago
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy has warned ships not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz using routes it has not approved, saying any violations would prompt a “decisive response”.
“We warn all vessels that intend to transit the strait, the only safe route… is the corridor previously announced by Iran,” the IRGC Navy said in a statement carried by Fars news agency.
“The diversion of vessels to other routes is unsafe and will face a decisive response from the IRGC Navy.”
US says Hormuz ‘Project Freedom’ is temporary operation
20 minutes ago
A US Central Command spokesperson said the military’s “Project Freedom” initiative in the Strait of Hormuz is a temporary operation aimed at securing maritime transit.
Speaking to Al Jazeera Arabic, the spokesperson said the plan is establishing a “safe corridor” and a “security umbrella” across the waterway.
They added that shipowners and insurance firms have reacted positively so far, noting that the operation has “just begun”.
The initiative is intended to ensure commercial vessels can move safely through the strait, supporting both regional and global economic activity, the spokesperson said.
Insurers assess shipping risks amid uncertainty in Iran war
45 minutes ago
Marcus Baker, global head of marine, cargo and logistics for insurance broker and risk adviser Marsh Risk, said it would take a few days to see how the insurance market reacts.
“We just have to see what happens, whether the Iranians keep the peace, whether the Americans keep the peace, and exactly what that’s going mean for shipping,” he said.
Broker added: “There’s rhetoric from both sides on this, and we’ve just got to be mindful of that.”
“Anything that starts to increase certainty around safety has got to be a good thing.”

‘Iran wants to make a deal’, Trump says
US President Donald Trump said Iran would have “taken over the Middle East” if not for the ongoing war on Iran, adding that Tehran is now “trying to survive”.
“We have a situation where we have total control. As you know, the blockade’s been amazing; it’s like a piece of steel. Nobody’s going to challenge the blockade, and I think it’s working out very well,” he said.
“Iran wants to make a deal. What I don’t like about Iran is that they’ll talk to me with such great respect, and then they’ll go and tell television, ‘We did not speak to the president,'” Trump said.
“They want to make a deal, and who wouldn’t when your military is totally gone? We could do anything we want to them. Who wouldn’t?” he added.
Trump says US has ‘completely destroyed Iran’s army’
2 hours ago
US President Donald Trump commented briefly on Washington’s role in the US-Israeli war on Iran while signing a proclamation on children’s physical fitness at the Oval Office in Washington, DC.
“We beat them very badly, now they’re reduced to little boats with machine guns on the front of them”, the president said of Iran, repeating earlier claims about the destruction of its navy.
“Every single ship they had is resting underwater at the bottom of the sea,” he said.
On Iran’s nuclear programme, he said, “These are sick people, and we’re not going to let lunatics have a nuclear weapon.”
Proposed UN Security Council resolution warns Iran could face sanctions over Hormuz
2 hours ago
A proposed United Nations Security Council resolution backed by the US and Gulf states warns Iran that it could face sanctions or further measures if it does not restore freedom of navigation and reveal the location of sea mines in and around the strategic waterway.
The draft text, seen by The Associated Press, also calls on Iran to “immediately participate in and enable the UN efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor in the strait” to allow the passage of essential supplies, including aid and fertiliser.
It has been drawn up under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which permits enforcement by military means. The document threatens “effective measures that are commensurate with the gravity of the situation, including sanctions” if Iran fails to comply.
An earlier attempt to pass a resolution on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of global crude oil supplies pass, was blocked after Russia and China used their veto powers.
Israeli court extends detention of Gaza aid flotilla activists

An Israeli court has extended the detention of two activists from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla who were seized by Israeli forces last week near Greece.
The Ashkelon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday approved a request to hold Saif Abu Keshek, a Spanish national, and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila until 10 May, Miriam Azem of the legal group Adalah told Al Jazeera.
The two were among dozens of campaigners taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near Greece on 30 April.
Organisers say around 180 activists were detained when the vessels were stopped, with Abu Keshek and Avila the only individuals transferred to Israel for questioning, where they remain in custody.

Additional air strikes hit the towns of Kfar, Barashit and Safad al-Batikh, as the attacks across the south continued.
Four Palestine Action activists convicted over 2024 damage to Israeli weapons factory

A UK court has convicted four pro-Palestinian activists of criminal damage after a 2024 action targeting a facility operated by Israeli military technology company Elbit.
Prosecutors told a London court that the defendants, who denied the charges, were affiliated with the now-banned group Palestine Action, which organised the action at the Bristol site in southwest England in August 2024
Two other individuals tried in the same case were cleared of the charges.
Palestine Action has previously accused the UK government of being complicit in Israeli war crimes in Gaza, and says it is “committed to ending global participation in Israel’s genocidal and apartheid regime.”
