After a year of terror in Gaza, our souls feel suspended in time

October 5, 2024
It is a terrible thing to witness the obliteration of your homeland. When I think about what we’ve lived through this past year, I feel like I’m going to lose my mind completely. It is a shock that I’m still unable to absorb. I try not to think at all, in the hope of maintaining my sanity until it ends.

They lie. They cheat. They steal. They bomb. And they spin

A case could be made that Iran’s Ballistic Retaliation Night, a measured response to Israel’s serial provocations, is less consequential when it comes to the efficacy of the Axis of Resistance than the decapitation of Hezbollah’s leadership.

Scientists Who First Identified Threat of Microplastics Say World Must Now Act

September 20, 2024
Some of the key scientists who first informed the world of the potential damage being done to natural systems by microplastics are now calling for world leaders to take decisive action to curb the introduction of these polluting materials into the environment—and they hope the looming United Nations treaty process on plastics can be a key vehicle for progress.

Water, War, and Women in Gaza

September 18, 2024
In late 2020, a report titled Saving Gaza Begins With Its Waterstated:
The water crisis in Gaza is a problem of daunting proportions, with grave implications for the more than 2 million inhabitants of the Palestinian enclave... The Coastal Aquifer from which Gaza pumps water is diminishing; but more dangerously, it is experiencing significant deterioration from seawater and highly saline groundwater intrusion, as well as sewage pollution.

25% of 95K Injuries inflicted by Israel in Gaza are “Life-Changing;” Require Medical Care that Israelis Destroyed

September 17, 2024
Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) – On Monday, Israeli bombardments killed 38 people in Gaza. Based on past experience, we can expect a majority of those killed to have been women and children — at least 21 and maybe more. Photographs and video coming out of Gaza show dead children being carried in burial shrouds. For intance, Al Jazeera reports that an Israeli bombardment of the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City killed 3 people, and that a child and a woman are among the dead. Several others were injured.

Israel is joining the first global AI convention, here’s why that’s dangerous

September 16, 2024
It is deeply troubling that Israel has been allowed to join the first global treaty on artificial intelligence (AI)—an agreement meant to regulate AI’s responsible use while upholding human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. For 11 consecutive months, Israel has weaponized AI in its genocide in Gaza, deploying AI-driven surveillance and automated targeting systems that have inflicted devastating civilian harm. Yet, Israel is now celebrating its participation in this treaty alongside the U.S., U.K., and EU, after spending two years at the negotiating table and helping draft the first international AI treaty for ethical AI governance. This contradiction exposes glaring hypocrisy and raises serious questions about the international community’s true commitment to accountability.
