20 Years On, the War on Terror Grinds Along, With No End in Sight

When President Biden told an exhausted nation on Aug. 31 that the last C-17 cargo plane had left Taliban-controlled Kabul, ending two decades of American military misadventure in Afghanistan, he defended the frantic, bloodstained exit with a simple statement: “I was not going to extend this forever war.”
And yet the war grinds on.

A Technologically Advanced Architectural Bridge

From Discover Magazine- Sept/ Oct 2021 (Page 66)

When a video of the double-Decker Ruyi Bridge in China's eastern Zhejiang province widely circulated online in early 2021, some viewers assumed it was fake. it's certainly a surreal sight. The nearly 330-foot-long winding glass bridge is composed of three wavy footpaths and spans the foggy gorges of the Shenxianju Scenic Area.

Did the War in Afghanistan Have to Happen?

In 2001, when the Taliban were weak and ready to surrender, the U.S. passed on a deal. Nearly 20 years later, the Taliban hold all the cards.

By Alissa J. Rubin

Published Aug. 23, 2021Updated Sept. 2, 2021Praying as U.S. planes conducted bombing operations in Takhar Province in northern Afghanistan in December 2001.

Taliban fighters brandished Kalashnikovs and shook their fists in the air after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, defying American warnings that if they did not hand over Osama Bin Laden, their country would be bombed to smithereens.

Threats and Fear Cause Afghan Women’s Protections to Vanish Overnight

As the Taliban advanced, safe houses for women closed, and the staff sheltered girls at home as relatives released from prison threatened to kill them.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meeting with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and other members of the Taliban negotiating team in Qatar last November.

It took years for Women for Afghan Women to build up Afghanistan’s largest network of women’s protection services — 32 safe houses, family guidance centers and children’s homes in 14 provinces, growing by word of mouth and driven by the intense need for their services.

ISM

Whenever these three letters end a word, a separation seems to be created. For instance, we say Americanism, which means a group of people who act and behave in a certain way and live in a certain geographical boundary. Socialism means living in a social group. Communism or capitalism, mean believing in certain pollical or economical systems. Some people are proud of belonging to any of these groups, and they mention it in their communications. However, there are some words ending in these three letters which are not accepted, and even some people act as if they belong to such groupings, they are not proud of calling themselves those titles, as such titles carry along with them some negative connotations. Examples of such “isms” are sexism, chauvinism, bastardism, and so on.

US Collective Suicide

Chris Hedges

Chris Hedges: US Collective Suicide – Consortiumnews

The debacle in Afghanistan, which will unravel into chaos with lightning speed over the next few weeks and ensure the return of the Taliban to power, is one more signpost of the end of the American empire.

The two decades of combat, the one trillion dollars spent, the 100,000 troops deployed to subdue Afghanistan, the high-tech gadgets, artificial intelligence, cyberwarfare, Reaper drones armed with Hellfire missiles and GBU-30 bombs and the Global Hawk drones with high-resolution cameras, Special Operations Command composed of elite rangers, SEALs and air commandos, black sites, torture, electronic surveillance, satellites, attack aircraft, mercenary armies, infusions of millions of dollars to buy off and bribe the local elites and train an Afghan army of 350,000 that has never exhibited the will to fight, failed to defeat a guerrilla army of 60,000 that funded itself through opium production and extortion in one of the poorest countries on earth.

How Many People Are at Risk of Losing Their Homes in Your Neighborhood?

 Sema K. Sgaier and

Alongside the prospect of a new surge in coronavirus infections, another crisis is on the horizon: A nationwide wave of evictions threatens more than six million families that have fallen behind on rent. The true extent of the threat has been masked by a national moratorium on evictions. But that ban will expire on Saturday, allowing landlords to start or continue eviction proceedings in most states.

The Origins of COVID-19 and the Urgent Case for U.S.-Sino Cooperation

 https://www.jeffsachs.org/journal-articles/cr8rn4hlw6m3ac9yz5r4txr2fs8cls

By: Jeffrey Sachs- July 19, 2021

As of mid-2021 the world reached nearly 4 million confirmed deaths from COVID-19. By any standard, the global response to the pandemic has been awful. From the very start, there was a dire shortfall of global cooperation. If there is one lesson from the coronavirus pandemic, it is that our very survival depends on cooperation among the major world powers. When they fight over COVID-19, or climate change, or cybersecurity, or other crucial challenges, the entire world loses.

Discover Magazine, June 2021- Page 65

Rising to the Challenge of China

FARAH STOCKMAN- POSTED ON March 18, 2021

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/18/opinion/biden-china.html?searchResultPosition=4

President Biden wasted no time in reversing some of the most damaging foreign policy decisions of the Trump era, rejoining the Paris climate accord and the World Health Organization on his first day in office. But there is one Trump policy that Mr. Biden is in no hurry to repudiate: tariffs on Chinese goods.
The Biden administration has not only left the tariffs in place, but it has also placed even stiffer restrictions on companies that sell to Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications equipment giant labeled a national security threat by the Trump administration.

China Has Risen.’ And It Is Hungry for Competition

FARAH STOCKMAN- Posted on June 30, 2021

When the Soviet Union crumbled in the 1990s, Americans did a victory lap that lasted for decades. We saw it as the triumph of capitalism over communism, freedom over authoritarianism, democracy over one-party rule. We assumed that the game was over and that we had won. We had reached “the end of history.” We thought that it was only a matter of time before China, which had already embraced some free-market reforms, transitioned to a system just like ours. Americans normalized trade with China and waited patiently for the “Chinese Gorbachev.” If you’re still out there waiting, don’t hold your breath.

From: Discover Magazine  July/ August 2021 (Page 42)

The Biggest Threat to America Is America Itself

By: Nicholas Kristof (June 23, 2021)

Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/23/opinion/america-security-competitiveness.html

We no longer have a White House aide desperately searching for a fire alarm to interrupt a president as he humiliates our country at an international news conference, as happened in 2018. And a Pew Research Center survey found that 75 percent of those polled in a dozen countries expressed “confidence in the U.S. president to do the right thing,” compared with 17 percent a year ago.

Israel Is Carrying Out Mass Murder, Aided and Abetted by the US

Chris Hedges
May 14, 2021

Israel is not exercising "the right to defend itself" in the occupied Palestinian territories. It is carrying out mass murder. It is a war crime.

Nearly all the words and phrases used by the Democrats, Republicans and the talking heads on the media to describe the unrest inside Israel and the heaviest Israeli assault against the Palestinians since the 2014 attacks on Gaza, which lasted 51 days and killed more than 2,200 Palestinians, including 551 children, are a lie.  Israel, by employing its military machine against an occupied population that does not have mechanized units, an air force, navy, missiles, heavy artillery and command-and-control, not to mention a U.S. commitment to provide a $38 billion defense aid package for Israel over the next decade, is not exercising "the right to defend itself." It is carrying out mass murder. It is a war crime.

A letter to Joe Biden

 https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/05/21/a-letter-to-biden-on-gaza/

May 21

Dear President Biden,

I am writing to you about Gaza, a place that I have studied and written about for the last 35 years, a place that I consider another home, filled with the kindest and most generous people you will ever meet—have you ever been there? But I am writing not only as a scholar of the region but as a Jew and one whose parents survived Auschwitz.

I have a question for you, Mr. President: When is the death of a child acceptable? Or perhaps I should ask the question this way: When does the death of a Palestinian child become unacceptable? You have experienced the unspeakable loss of your own children so you are better placed than most to answer my questions.

How Joe Biden Can Win a Nobel Peace Prize

Thomas Friedman May 23, 2021

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/23/opinion/israel-hamas-biden.html?searchResultPosition=1

Leon Trotsky once supposedly observed, “You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.” To President Biden I’d say today, “You may not be interested in Middle East peacemaking, but Middle East peacemaking is interested in you.” Here’s why: All three key players in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have been dealt some huge painful shocks over the past year. They know, deep down, that another round of fighting like the one we saw in the past two weeks could unleash disastrous consequences for each of them. Henry Kissinger forged the first real peace breakthrough between Israelis and Arabs after they were all reeling, vulnerable and in pain as a result of the 1973 War. They each knew that something had to change.
