As a wave of unrest in Iran sparked by the death of a Kurdish woman in police custody continues to rock the nation two and a half months after it began, crackdowns by security forces on demonstrations have at times been met with armed resistance, threatening a new, even more violent phase in which the Islamic Republic would be fighting for its very survival.
Newsweek spoke with officials, experts and activists who acknowledged the potential for this new phase of instability persisting throughout Iran.
For those who believe that the political system in the United States is a democracy, with the definition of “democracy” that one can find in dictionaries, it will perhaps be shocking to learn about the electoral statistics. Analyzing various elections in the United States, one can infer that the most important election by far, is a presidential election, when majority of the population participate. According to Statistica, percentage of those eligible to vote in presidential election was the highest in 2020 with 67%, and percentage of votes in comparison to total population was 48% in the same year. It means that more than one third of the eligible people did not bother participating in presidential election. And those who participated, were even less than half of the total US population.

The movement, born out of long-seething anger over decades of repression, cascaded after police arrested 22-year-old Mahsa Amini — also known by her Kurdish name, Jina — in a Tehran metro station for violating Iran’s conservative dress code for women, then allegedly beat her to death and tried to cover it up. What began in Amini’s hometown in a Kurdish-dominated province has grown into a sustained, nationwide challenge to the regime — and one not easily defeated.

The Iranian Human Rights group said that more than half had been killed in areas with high Kurdish and Baloch populations. Meanwhile, Iranian authorities acknowledge a toll of more than 300 for the first time.Iranian security forces have killed at least 488 people in a crackdown on protests, the Iranian Human Rights (IHR) group said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a general of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps said "more than 300 martyrs and people" have been killed in the unrest, the first time authorities have acknowledged such a figure.
Protests broke out in mid-September in Iran following the death of young Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody, who had been detained for allegedly failing to wear her veil according to the Islamic Republic's strict dress code.

On the evening of 16 November, two members of Iran’s security forces were killed and at least eight others were injured in the neighborhood of Khane Esfahan in the city of Isfahan. The assailants who carried out the attack reportedly drove by on motorcycles and opened fire on the security forces stationed in the street.
According to Fars News Agency, the two victims were Mohsen Hamidi and Mohammad Hossein Karimi, both members of the Basij – one of the five armed wings of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that serves as an auxiliary force engaged in internal security.

Don’t bother showing up for the lecture that a prominent Iranian American author was supposed to give at Harvard this month. It’s been “postponed.” Harvard acted after being bombarded with protests and threatened with a large-scale demonstration.
That gave me a free evening, since I was supposed to introduce the lecturer, Trita Parsi, author of three books about Iran. It also fits into a startling pattern of harassment and threats that has passionately split the Iranian American community. Those who favor negotiation with Iran, including a new nuclear deal, are being bitterly attacked by compatriots who reject any contact with the mullahs’ regime while brave girls and women are being shot by police back home.
Videos shared on social media appear to show the house of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on fire, with activists saying that it was torched by protesters – a claim rejected by state media.

Iran is a country of contradictions. It possesses intense natural beauty, deep cultural and historical roots, and a formidable people from a kaleidoscope of ethnic origins. For 43 years, Iran has been under theocratic rule, led by a supreme leader and a power structure that has instilled fear in the very people it governs and that has ostracised the country from the global community.
According to Melicka Jamshidabadi, a highly successful filmmaker and photographer, women have been denied freedom of dress, expression, and equal rights before a court of law, as well as the ability to hold senior decision-making authority in the government or judiciary. Despite this, young Iranian women are reported to have the highest literacy rate in the Middle East, with a high percentage of university graduates. They have one of the highest percentages of university graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics when compared with other countries.
