The attack took place
early on Saturday and resulted in the killing of an Iranian sailor and the
injury of another, the ministry said.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry added that Kiev’s attack is “a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and an act of aggression that could further escalate the ongoing conflict.”
“Ukrainian leadership's acknowledgment of the attack demonstrated the continuation of Kiev's hostile and irrational policy toward the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement went on to say.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also called on the UN Security Council, EU states, and all UN member nations to condemn Ukraine’s attack.
“Adopt a responsible position and hold the Ukrainian government accountable for a criminal and provocative act,” it stated.
The ministry warned that Iran “will not hesitate to defend its national interests and security, and that “responsibility for the consequences of the incident rests with the Ukrainian government and its supporters.”
Hours earlier, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky announced responsibility for striking Iranian assets at sea.
While announcing attacks against Russia, Zelensky said: “We also achieved very strong results with long‑range strikes in the Caspian Sea – including vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship.”
Zelensky went on to say that he will order Ukrainian spy services to “share intelligence” with Kiev’s “partners" regarding “Russia's new assistance to the Iranian regime.”
Ukraine has repeatedly accused Iran of providing Russia with military support for the war between Kiev and Moscow.
Years ago, Iranian authorities acknowledged sending drones to Russia, but said the shipments were delivered before the Ukraine war.
Kiev has long been in alignment with US-Israeli policy regarding Iran. In 2023, Ukrainian state media said Zelensky was preparing legislation to impose sanctions on Tehran “for 50 years.”
Recent days have seen President Donald Trump collapse the so-called US-Iran ceasefire, renewing Washington’s siege and heavy bombardment against the Islamic Republic.
Tehran has responded with heavy drone and missile strikes on US army assets across the region, resulting in significant casualties and losses, including the deaths of several US soldiers and the destruction of critical military infrastructure.
Iran says it will leave “no trace” of the US military presence in West Asia if Trump carries out his threats to destroy all of Iran’s bridges and power sites.
Meanwhile, US intelligence assessments have concluded that continued military attacks against the Islamic Republic are “unlikely to move” Tehran or “soften its position” in any potential new round of negotiations, according to the Washington Post.
