Iran's crackdown on protesters unacceptable and intolerable, Italy PM says

Alvise Armellini

December 29, 2022

Iran's repression of protesters, including with the death penalty, is unacceptable and intolerable, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday.

"What is happening today in Iran is unacceptable for us, Italy can no longer tolerate it," Meloni said in an end-of-year press conference.

If Tehran does not change its stance, Italy will consult with allies to take more effective action against the regime, Meloni added.

On Wednesday, Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani summoned the Iranian ambassador to Rome and told him his country had to stop executions and start a dialogue with protesters.

Shah of Shahs

Iran brags about its missile export to Palestinians, Hezbollah

Seth J. Frantzman

December 25, 2022

By “resistance,” the report was referring to a network of pro-Iranian groups and proxy groups it supports, particularly Hezbollah, the Palestinians and Yemen.

The article begins as a tribute to Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, an Iranian IRGC general who was killed in an explosion at a missile facility near Tehran on November 12, 2011.

What Really Saved the Democrats This Year?

Progressives and moderates both have a theory of the case.

Thomas B. Edsall

Dec. 21, 2022

In the Democratic Party, despite its better-than-expected showing in the 2022 midterm elections, internecine combat has been playing out in disputes over the party’s nominees and the policies they propose. At the nuts-and-bolts level of candidate selection, the debate has become intensely emotional and increasingly hostile.

 AFP

December 14, 2022

The executions in the past week of Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard, both 23 and the first people put to death over the protests, sparked an outcry, especially as Rahnavard was hanged from a crane in public rather than in prison.

Iran’s currency falls further against the dollar amid unrest

 AP

CAIRO (AP) — Iran’s currency fell to a record low against the dollar on Sunday, with nationwide anti-government protests now in their third month. A breakdown in negotiations to restore Tehran’s nuclear deal has also hurt the value of the rial.

Iran’s currency was trading at 32,000 rials to the dollar at the time of the 2015 nuclear accord that dropped international sanctions in exchange for tight controls on Iran’s nuclear program.

Britain Is Miserable, but Britons Are Fighting Back

Rachel Shabi

December 8, 2022

Inflation is in double digits, and the recession — the worst of all Group of 7 countries — is expected to last deep into 2024. The National Health Service is on life support, public transport is sputtering, and post-Brexit worker shortages are widespread. Homeowners face soaring mortgage rates, renters are subject to no-fault evictions, and millions can’t afford to heat their homes. Food banks, which barely existed a decade ago, are at breaking point, and 14.5 million people are in poverty. Winter is here, and it’s bleak.

Outsider in the House

For those who believe that the political system in the United States is a democracy, with the definition of “democracy” that one can find in dictionaries, it will perhaps be shocking to learn about the electoral statistics. Analyzing various elections in the United States, one can infer that the most important election by far, is a presidential election, when majority of the population participate. According to Statistica, percentage of those eligible to vote in presidential election was the highest in 2020 with 67%, and percentage of votes in comparison to total population was 48% in the same year. It means that more than one third of the eligible people did not bother participating in presidential election. And those who participated, were even less than half of the total US population.

Iran’s regime at an impasse as protest movement defies crackdown

Miriam Berger

December 1, 2022

The uprising in Iran, well into its third month, continues to defy expectations, persisting even amid an increasingly violent crackdown and opponents of clerical rule uniting across class and ethnic lines.

The movement, born out of long-seething anger over decades of repression, cascaded after police arrested 22-year-old Mahsa Amini — also known by her Kurdish name, Jina — in a Tehran metro station for violating Iran’s conservative dress code for women, then allegedly beat her to death and tried to cover it up. What began in Amini’s hometown in a Kurdish-dominated province has grown into a sustained, nationwide challenge to the regime — and one not easily defeated.

Covering Iran’s unrest and crackdown from thousands of miles away

Elahe Izadi

November 28, 2022

For more than two months, journalist Golnaz Esfandiari has been reporting nonstop on the protests and brutal crackdowns erupting across Iran — from more than 2,500 miles away in Prague.

It’s not easy. With foreign press virtually absent inside Iran — where authorities are arresting local journalists, restricting internet access and allegedly spreading misinformation online — distant correspondents such as Esfandiari face a deluge of challenges in getting accurate news about Iran to the rest of the world.
