  • Iran’s military headquarters warns any US interference in the Strait of Hormuz will be met with a “decisive and swift response” as tensions continue to roil negotiations.
  • Qatar reports “positive progress” as the US and Iran conclude indirect technical talks in Doha on issues related to the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17.
  • Tehran says a “communication channel” will be established with Washington to report and discuss breaches of the interim deal.
  • Iran has lodged a protest at the UN over Israel’s latest death threat against its Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei describing it as “state terrorism”.
Iran’s Araghchi slams US-led military talks in Bahrain
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has now also criticised the US army-led meeting of 12 nations in Bahrain.
“Has CENTCOM brought security or insecurity to our region? The answer is clear,” he said in a post on X.
He also praised Iran’s military capabilities, stating that the country’s armed forces “have proven that outsiders cannot even protect themselves”.
“Peace in our region can only be sustained when comprehensive and inclusive, with no outside interference,” he added.

Austrian embassy resumes regular operations in Tehran
Austria has resumed regular operations at its embassy in Tehran.
In a social media post, the Austrian Embassy said its regular activities resumed on July 1 and the resumption of consular services will be announced at a later date.
The mission had suspended consular services in 2025, citing what it described at the time as “insurmountable obstacles”.

Pakistan, Saudi FMs discuss US-Iran mediation efforts in Doha during call
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has spoken to his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, discussing ongoing mediation efforts in Qatar between the United States and Iran.

Iran warns ships must use approved routes in Strait of Hormuz or face a ‘forceful response’
Iran’s joint military command has warned ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz to use its approved routes or face a “forceful response”, according to Iran’s state broadcaster.
“Any failure to comply, deviation from the designated route, or disregard for the navigation protocols of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz will be met with an immediate and forceful response from the armed forces”, a statement carried by the television channel said.
The warning from the Khatam al-Anbiya military command came after a ship ran aground in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday while using a route not approved by Iran, as reported by Iran’s state television.

Control of Strait of Hormuz ‘non-negotiable’ for Iran
Control of the Strait of Hormuz remains a rare point of consensus within Iran’s leadership and is unlikely to change, says academic Rob Geist Pinfold.
“Control over the Strait of Hormuz is a non-negotiable for the Iranian leadership. This is one of the few issues that they actually do agree on,” Pinfold told Al Jazeera.
He said Iran has institutionalised its authority over the strategic waterway, saying it has “set up a mechanism for it to exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz” and that the issue has become a bureaucratic process involving “the files and forms that shipping companies have to fill in”.
Pinfold, a lecturer at King’s College London, said there is “no military solution here” and that only a US-Iran agreement could alter the situation. Until then, he predicted “the new status quo” will be one where “Iran calls the shots over the Strait of Hormuz”.

Iran dismisses US-led security talks in Bahrain, calls them ‘performative posturing’
Iran has criticised a US-led regional security meeting hosted by Bahrain, after senior military officials from 12 Middle Eastern countries met with US Central Command (CENTCOM) to discuss regional defence cooperation and maritime security.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, in a post on X, said Washington had “constantly demonstrated its complete contempt for genuine peace and security in West Asia,” dismissing such meetings as “nothing more than performative posturing”.
Baghaei accused Washington of seeking to conceal the US’s “destabilising policies and lawless behavior in the region” and urged regional states to “remain vigilant and draw clear lessons from the most recent US and Israeli military aggressions”.
