MORE WAR!

Can we make a relationship between the followings: incessant increase in federal deficit since the beginning of this century, war, austerity measures, obliteration of the first amendment, conglomeration of media. In addition, we can compare it with ethnic events of the past few days such as the murder of innocent people in Afghanistan on a rampage and “Old West” style gun slinging of a vigilante ending by killing a black man “who looked suspicious” and killing of an Arab immigrant with a racial note?

در “الکامل فی‌ التاریخ” یا تاریخ ابن اثیر آمده است که: “مردی به نزد عُمَر بن خطاب آمد و گفت: تاریخی‌ پایه گذاری کنید. عُمَر گفت: تاریخ چیست؟ گفت: چیزی است که عجمان میکنند و می‌گویند در بهمان سال و بهمان ماه چنین و چنان شد. عُمَر گفت: کاری نیکوست”! در گویش پارسی‌ واژهٔ تاریخ دو معنی دارد، که هم نشانه ای و یا مقطعی از زمان است و هم نگارشِ وقایع. البته واقعه نگاری بدون دانستن زمانِ وقایع چندان درست به نظر نمیاید، و شاید به همین دلیل از این واژه برای بیان هر دو مطلب استفاده میشود. در ایران باستان، چنان که سلسله ای و گاهی پادشاه جدیدی به قدرت میرسید، تاریخ را از آن زمان آغاز میکردند، که این کارِ واقعه نگار را مشکل میساخت.  ولی چنانکه از این حکایت ابن اثیر بر میاید، بیانِ تاریخِ وقوع در نقل وقایع تاریخی‌ از سالهای بسیار دور در ایران متداول بوده است.

Nationalism

Whether it is called patriotism or nationalism, both words are used by people referring to the same meaning, in general, with nationalism depicting more of a geographical area. According to Webster Dictionary, Nationalism is: ”loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups” and Patriotism is: “love for or devotion to one’s country”. For the purpose of this article, let us assume that patriotism and nationalism have the same general meaning of loving one’s country or nation. The question is, whether nationalism leads one to a process of racism and chauvinism, or it is the tool in pursuit of independence and democracy. Deposed kings or those who are exiled from their countries take a fistful of dirt with them to remind them of their homeland, or to get a whiff of their glorious past when they are homesick! This obviously is not nationalism, but idiocy or deceit. The odor of earth is probably different depending on the chemical compound of it, and whether it is picked up from the city ground, or outskirts, or villages, or Home Depot! One may carry with him a rock or a handcraft that is unique to his beloved society, instead. In addition, race, language, custom, tradition, climate and nature are varied in different places on earth. Different countries may have different climates, but a country may have variety of atmospheric changes in different regions. Nature may also be different in parts of a country, while people more or less adapt to the environment easily. Language and looks and attire or fashion may also be different, but one can see variety of tongues and customs and races in a multi-cultural or multi-national society, and within the same border.

نیمچه سواد

بقول مشیری، هیچ کسی‌ بدتر از آدمی‌ نیست که نیمچه سوادی دارد! اشکالِ آدمهائی که نیمچه سواد دارند این است که فکر میکنند که همه چیز را میدانند و علامه دهر هستند. بنا بر این از تدقیق و مطالعه در مورد مطالبی‌ که اطلاعات کمی‌ دارند گریزانند. نمونه بارز آن دوست صمیمی‌ من است که بیشتر از ۵۰ سال از عمرش می‌گذرد، و احتمالش کم است که تا کنون هیچ کتابی را بغیر از کتابهای درسی‌ خوانده باشد. اخبار خود را هم یا از روز نامه های اینترنتی و یا از گویندگان ماهواره های فارسی دریافت می‌کند. گر چه قبلا کمی‌ تمایلات ترقّی خواهانه داشت، از زمانی‌ که شروع به دیدن برنامهٔ یاران میبدی کرده است، افکارش در گوشه راست سیاسی به دام افتاده است. البته اشخاصی‌ چون این دوست گرامیِ من با دیدن یک برنامهٔ منحط تلویزیونی یک مرتبه تغییر جهت نمیدهند، و زمینهٔ قبلی‌ برای پناه بردن به دامانِ امنِ “راست” را همیشه داشته ا‌ند. دوست من هم نخست تمایلات مذهبی‌ داشت، چرا که خاستگاه خانوادگی‌اش مذهبی‌، و از یکی‌ از شهرهای مذهبی‌ خوزستان است. پس از کنکاشِ بسیار و مشاهده اثراتِ ویرانگرِ مذهب در ایران (که جمهوری پُر برکت اسلامی به اکثر اشخاص ماهیت مذهب، بخصوص دین ارتجاعی اسلام را بخوبی نشان داده است) زمینه مذهبی‌ او سست شد. گر چه، کماکان به حکومتِ خالی‌ از تعقل و نابود گر اسلامی ایران، بسیار بیشتر از آنچه که لیاقت داشت بار سیاسی میداد.

The Drum of War

The government owned media is beating the drum of war again. This time, the direct insult is on Syria while preparation is made for Iran to be the next in line. The history of the control of media by the US and its allies goes back to the begining of the union. However, it has never been in such total domination. From the time when people of like-minded in the Right used their money and their influence to control the media through takeovers and acquisitions, a monopoly of far Right controlled media was established. Media became the mouthpiece of conservative ideology, and Western governments banned together behind conservative agenda and established their policies on such ideologies. Taking over worldwide trade through IMF and World Bank has gained many advantages, however direct attack on other countries is the next and vital step. No one can forget the big lie of “Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction”. After Iraq attacked Kuwait, a weeping innocent little girl, went on national TV and horrified everyone by a disclosure that she witnessed Kuwaiti babies taken from incubators and thrown away by Iraqi soldiers with the intention of stealing those machines. It was discovered later that the girl was the daughter of the Kuwait consulate in Washington, and the whole story was a big fabrication. Bush’s lies about Saddam, Osama Bin Laden, and Taliban leaders sound very much like every other US president’s, who fabricated (or in some instances created) a story in order to plan a war, from the war in Hawaii and Philippines, to the war in Libya. Syria is next in line to be dismantled as a country and to be turned into rubbles by American and NATO soldiers, like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. The citizens who do not allege their alliances to the super powers will be murdered and urinated on by American and NATO soldiers. Unfortunately, in spite of all the disclosures, majority of Westerners are still fooled by their leaders, into wars. Notwithstanding, many books have been written on the subject; from Chomsky’s “Manufacturing Consent” to Parenti’s “Monopoly Media Manipulation” to Bagdikian’s “Media Monopoly”, and the one in favor of the media monopoly “The Media Monopoly Myth- How new competition is expanding our sources of information and entertainment” by Benjamin M. Compaine! But the saga of war mongers continues.

Jaafar yaghoobi, a former political prisoner in Iran, has published his prison diary that testifies the story of millions of Iranians imprisoned by a vicious, self centered, and brutal regime. The publication of this memoir coincides with the western countries’ strongest push to attack Iran, initiated by Israel. Although Yaghoobi discloses in graphic detail various ways of persecution, torture, and murder ordered by top officials in the government and conducted by their subjects, he concludes that freedom in the country can be achieved only by Iranian people and without any outside interferences:”Iran often is portrayed in the West, particularly in the United States, in a way that mainly serves the purpose of those bent on military action against Iran, whether for the destruction of Iranian nuclear facilities or for regime change engineered by the West…The millions of Iranians who flooded the streets in June 2009 to oppose the regime are perhaps the most graphic illustration of why this picture and ‘solution’ are so terribly flawed…Regime change is needed in Iran but must be done by Iranians in their own interest, in their own time, and in their own way, rather than imposed by foreign powers [page 372].

The organization chart of a government shapes like a pyramid. The tip of the pyramid is occupied by decision-making group that includes a president and his ministers and consultants. Growing in number and spreading downward, all other officials are located. Policies and directives also follow the same direction and procedure. If those on the top of the pyramid advocate democratic rules, that rule will spread out to the rest of the system democratically. Likewise, a dictatorial regime is infected from the top to the bottom and in the same manner. 19^th century Russia was ruled by a dictator and every province and little town was ruled by a despot commander. The smallest community, that is a family, follows the same order.

Occupation

It is worthwhile to repeat the short story of a journalist who asked Gandhi once what he thought of Western Civilization. Gandhi responded: “It is a good idea!” Witnessing the sweep that NYPD made a few nights ago (early hours of the morning in fact) makes one wonder about the meaning of democracy every US leader boasts about so much. US occupation of other countries of the world such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, began with the intention of exporting democracy. However, when a group of people occupies a piece of public land in the US, they encounter armed riot police, evicting them from their encampments. So occupation has a double meaning, US government’s occupation is for expanding “democracy”, but people’s occupation is against “democracy”. Obviously, the meaning of democracy we hear from US officials and American media at least once a day is something other than one’s ability to occupy a public land! When US drones and military machine attacks people of Middle East, it applies its own brand of democracy without considering the will of those that are victimized. Or, maybe a free will is permitted to some people, i.e. high government officials and wealthy people, and not to the rest. For the same reason, free will is permitted outside of the US to those who observe American interest before the interest of their own people.

می‌گویند روزنامه نگاری از گاندی پرسید که نظرش راجع به تمدن غرب چیست. گاندی با سه کلمه پاسخ داد: “فکر خوبی‌ است”! عناصر آگاه در هند و سایر کشورهای استعمار زده در بدو استعمار میدانستند که تمدنشان از تمدن غرب بسیار پیشرفته تر بود، گر چه تکنولوژی آنها در مقایسهٔ با اروپا پیشرفت شایانی نکرده بود. دلیل این عدم پیشرفت این بود که بر خلاف غرب که در زمان رنسانس گذار جدائی از مذهب را طی کرده بود، شرق هم چنان در دامن ارتجاع پا به زنجیر بود، که هنوز هم هست. عقب ماندگی کشورهای مستعمره، یعنی‌ تقریبا کلیه کشورهای خاورمیانه و آفریقا، به دلیل دخالت غرب و سیاست استعماری برای عقب نگاه داشتن آنها بوده و هست. از دو قرن پیش امپراطوری انگلیس، و سپس آمریکا و اقمارش، به این نتیجه رسیدند که مذهب، بخصوص مذهب ارتجاعی و میلیتاریستی اسلام، بهترین وسیله برای عقب نگاه داشتن جوامع اسلامی است. چرا که مذهب با هر گونه تجدد، نوگرائی، دگر اندیشی‌، و نوآوری بطرز وحشیانه‌ای مبارزه می‌کند. دشمنیِ دین با نوگرایی، و دشمنیِ اسلام با دگر اندیشی‌ از صدر اسلام آغاز و همچنان ادامه دارد. ولی‌ هر چند گاهی‌ به کسانی‌ در تاریخ ایران بر می‌خوریم که پیشگام جنبشی بودند که میتوانست سرنوشت کشور را به سوئی ببرد که با فضای ارتجاعی امروز دنیائی فاصله میداشت. احمد کسروی در مشاغلی که داشت کاملا نشان داد که استقلال فکری داشته و از ارتجاع سیاسی و مذهبی‌ واهمه‌ای نمیداشت. گر چه غرب گرا بود، از تسلط کشورهای غربی بر جوامعی که در ظلمات اسلام مدفون شده بودند کاملا آگاهی‌ داشت. زمانی‌ که در مورد بهائیگری مینوشت، از چنگال غرب در دامان این مذهب نو خواسته به منظور بر افروختن تضاد مذهبی‌ واقف بود.

Primitive man had to use his strength to overcome hunger and other basic needs, and in order to survive. He fought over small rations he could find, until he realized that hunting in a group and as a team, they could achieve better results. Cooperation meant sharing the spoil equally. However, there were those who were not able to join the hunt and needed a share, and that was the beginning of altruism. As man evolved, so did his brain. To facilitate hunting they made tools. This, coupled with agriculture (planting seed and growing and harvesting crops) put human being one-step above animals. In contrast with what we have been told repeatedly by our leaders and media, competition, greed, selfishness, and jealousy were not part of early men’s characters, and these traits were not (and are not) elements of human nature. However, there were always those individuals who had these qualities, but they have been of minorities. When such people were in command, they would instigate wars against other tribes. After many wars, some discovered that they could enslave prisoners of war (instead of killing them) and exploit slaves’ labor for their own benefits. Hence, slavery became another reason for wars, resulting subjugation of captured warriors and prisoners of war. As societies developed into civilizations, wars became a tool for ambitious leaders in order to expand their empire and benefit toil of others. In the advent of a big empire such as Iran, Greece, or Rome, the necessity of having a regular army was envisaged. In order to recruit people into such armies, nationalism (regarding the government or the king, not necessarily common people) was encouraged. Although the military was characterized to exist for defense of the mother nation, it has always been utilized for attacking weaker nations when opportunity arose. Ordinary people were still against wars, but they had no choice when the dictator forced them to join his army. Afterwards, in addition to nationalism, governments found religion, partition (race, religion, creed), and propaganda as suitable tools to persuade people into acquiescence. When there was no enemy, it became necessary to create one.

Operation Death

When I heard about the simple prostate operation my brother-in-law was going to have in a hospital in Germany, I did not think much about it considering the progressive health care system in that country and its advanced technological innovations beside of the reputable surgeons’ and physicians’ care. However, I was wrong.

Declaration of Independence

“Signing Their Lives Away” is a book by Denise Kiernan and Joseph D’Agnese about the 56 who signed Declaration of Independence. The book is a short biography of each person (titled with an interesting fact about that person), and with a comic flavor. For example, “The signer everyone loved to hate” or “The signer who gave us Gerrymandering” or “The signer who objected to, well, everything” or “The signer who was sure he would hang” or “The signer who designed US flag” or “The signer who financed the war- and ended up in debtors’ prison” and so on. Each signer has an intriguing story, one such story belongs to Benjamin Rush whose biography is reprinted here.

تاریخ مختصر

             ماهها

گردش زمین به دور خورشید، یعنی‌ یک سال شمسی‌، ۳۶۵ روز و ۵ ساعت و ۴۸ دقیقه و ۴۶ ثانیه است، که شامل دوازده ماه است که هر ماه میتواند ۳۱ روز (شش ماه اول سال) و یا ۳۰ روز (پنج ماه دوم سال) و یا ۲۹ (یا ۳۰ در سال کبیسه که توضیح آن در زیر میاید) روز (ماه آخر) باشد. حاصل جمع روزهای ماههای شمسی‌ ۳۶۵ است. در این صورت از هر سال حدود ۶ ساعت باقی‌ میماند که هر چهار سال این رقم ۲۴، یعنی‌ یک روز میشود. با اضافه کردن یک روز به آخرین ماه سال (اسفند =۳۰) روزها تقریبا در جای خود قرار گرفته، و نمودار یک مدار کامل میشوند. سالی‌ که ماه آخر آن ۳۰ روزه است سال کبیسه نام دارد.

ماه های میلادی با توجه به سال کبیسه مانند ماه های شمسی‌ محاسبه میشوند، لیکن تعداد روزها در هر ماه متفاوت است. تعداد روزهای ماههای میلادی به دین قرار است: ژانویه ۳۱ روز، فوریه ۲۸ روز (در سال کبیسه این ماه ۲۹ روز میشود)، مارس ۳۱ روز، آوریل ۳۰ روز، می ۳۱ روز، ژوئن ۳۰ روز، ژوئیه ۳۱ روز، اوت ۳۱ روز، سپتامبر ۳۰ روز، اکتبر ۳۱ روز، نوامبر ۳۰ روز، و دسامبر ۳۱ روز، که جمعا همان ۳۶۵ روز میشود.

سالهای قمری مانند میلادی و شمسی‌ ۱۲ ماه دارند. هر ماه قمری بطور متوسط ۲۹ روز و ۱۲ ساعت و ۴۴ دقیقه است، که بسته به گردش ماه این تعداد گاهی ۲۹ و گاهی ۳۰ روز است. بدین ترتیب سالهای قمری از سالهای شمسی‌ و میلادی کوتاهتر هستند. مثلا امروز که ۵ شهریور ۱۳۹۰ است، مطابق ۲۷ رمضان ۱۴۳۲ و ۲۷ اوت ۲۰۱۱ می‌باشد. یعنی از فرار کردن محمد از مکّه به مدینه ۱۳۹۰ سال شمسی‌، ولی‌ ۱۴۳۲ سال قمری گذشته است. محرم که اولین ماه قمری است ۳۰ روز دارد، صفر ۲۹ روز، ربیع‌الاول ۳۰ روز، ربیع‌الثانی ۲۹ روز، جمادی‌الاول ۳۰ روز، جمادی‌الثانی ۲۹ روز، رجب ۳۰ روز، شعبان ۲۹ روز، رمضان ۳۰ روز، شوال ۲۹ روز، ذی‌القعده ۳۰ روز، ذی‌الحجه ۲۹ روز، که مجموعاً ۳۵۴ روز میشود.
