As multiple wildfires tore across Los Angeles County this week, leveling thousands of homes and businesses and killing at least 10 people, incoming President Donald Trump seized upon the crisis as an opportunity to point fingers and make false claims.

Trump has a choice: Obliterate Palestine or end the war

November 7, 2024
David Hearst
Conventional wisdom has it that Trump 2.0 will be a disaster for Palestinians, because Trump 1.0 all but buried the Palestinian national cause.

European values and the power to forgive terrorists

Hugo Dionísio
Throughout 2024, we have all heard the term “European values” used countless times by von der Leyen, Borrel, Kaja Kallas, and now António Costa as a weapon against opponents and as a supposedly civilizational wall against elected enemies. Values such as the “promotion of peace” or “solidarity and mutual respect between peoples” have come to coexist with a logic of confrontation, in which the level of fanaticism with which these values are waged against others has become the main element of evaluation and performance, and the guarantor of individual promotion in the chain of power.

Widening the cracks in Israel’s war machine

Meron Rapoport
It takes a certain kind of audacity or disconnectedness, or perhaps both, to try and write something hopeful for 2025. A sober and realistic assessment of the political forces in Israel-Palestine, the wider region, and the world as a whole does not elicit much optimism that the ongoing catastrophe of the past 15 months — particularly what Palestinians are enduring in Gaza — may soon come to an end.

How picturing the Boston Massacre ...

Massacre

Humans are the most vicious of all species. We don’t have to go back to pre-dinosaurs’ time in order to verify the brutalities and barbarism of our ancestors. When we wake up in the morning and check the news for the events of the previous day, there is at least one report of an international conflict or war happening in some parts of the world, and there is at a minimum one homicide committed in the country where we live, and there is always the news of a government or an individual or a group of people hurting another individual or group as a reprimand or for personal gain. Governments killing their own citizens as a punishment is another story.

Bloodshed and a hope for peace: What does 2025 hold for Israel and the Middle East?

Elizabeth Blade
The last year has been characterized by more than 45,000 deaths in Gaza, the destruction of Hezbollah, confrontations with Yemen’s Houthis and an exchange of fire with Iran. 2025 will probably continue this trend. Yet, with the comeback of President Donald Trump Israel may also be given opportunities, including the expansion of its historic Abraham Accords.

2024 Will Be Remembered as the Year Israel’s Global Legitimacy Fully Unraveled

Khury Petersen-Smith
Since the state of Israel’s founding, its leaders and supporters have sought acceptance among other states as a peer, and legitimacy in the eyes of the global public. It has achieved mixed success on the former — and failed repeatedly on the latter.

A year of shame, and many more to come

Jonathan Ofir
The shame of Israel's genocide in Gaza will haunt the international moral conscience and the Israeli psyche for the coming century. Though Israelis, accustomed to the perpetual shaming of Germany, are unprepared for the shame they must now confront.
