قرمطیان گروهی وابسته به اسماعیلیان یا باطنیان بودند که پس از قیام علی بن محمد برقعی معروف به (صاحب الزنج) که میان سالهای ۲۵۵-۲۷۰ هجری در نواحی جنوبی عراق صورت گرفت و بنیان حکومت عباسیان را متزلزل ساخت، و با تلفات انسانی و مالی بسیار همراه بود، خود مستقلاً وارد صحنه مبارزه شده و به قیام دیگری پرداختند که از نظر قدرت و دوام و حدود قلمرو و بسط حکومت و تاسیس نظام اجتماعی در جهت رفاه مستمندان از نهضت صاحب الزنجی برتر و مهمتر بود.^[۱]

عُمَر خَیّام نیشابوری (نام کامل: غیاث‌الدین ابوالفتح عُمَر بن ابراهیم خَیّام نیشابوری) (زادهٔ ۲۸ اردیبهشت ۴۲۷ در نیشابور - درگذشتهٔ ۱۲ آذر ۵۱۰ در نیشابور)^[۳] که خیامی و خیام نیشابوری و خیامی النّیسابوری^[۲] هم نامیده شده‌است، فیلسوف، ریاضی‌دان، ستاره‌شناس و رباعیسرای ایرانی در دورهٔ سلجوقی است. گرچه پایگاه علمی خیام برتر از جایگاه ادبی اوست و لقبش «حجّةالحق» بوده‌است،^[۴] ولی آوازهٔ وی بیشتر به‌واسطهٔ نگارش رباعیاتش است که شهرت جهانی دارد. افزون بر آن‌که رباعیات خیام را به اغلب زبان‌های زنده ترجمه نموده‌اند، ادوارد فیتزجرالد^[۵] رباعیات او را به زبان انگلیسی ترجمه کرده‌است که مایهٔ شهرت بیشتر وی در مغرب‌زمین شده‌است.

یکی از برجسته‌ترین کارهای وی را می‌توان اصلاح گاه‌شماری ایران در زمان وزارت خواجه نظام‌الملک، که در دورهٔ سلطنت ملک‌شاه سلجوقی (۴۲۶–۴۹۰ هجری قمری) بود، دانست. وی در ریاضیات، نجوم، علوم ادبی، دینی و تاریخی استاد بود. نقش خیام در حل معادلات درجه‌سوم و مطالعاتش دربارهٔ اصل پنجم اقلیدس نام او را به عنوان ریاضی‌دانی برجسته در تاریخ علم ثبت کرده‌است.^[۶] ابداع نظریه‌ای دربارهٔ نسبت‌های هم‌ارز با نظریهٔ اقلیدس نیز از مهم‌ترین کارهای اوست.^[۷]

شماری از تذکرهنویسان، خیام را شاگرد ابن سینا و شماری نیز وی را شاگرد امام موفق نیشابوری خوانده‌اند.^[۴][۸][۹] صحت این فرضیه که خیام شاگرد ابن سینا بوده‌است، بسیار بعید می‌نماید، زیرا از لحاظ زمانی با هم تفاوت زیادی  داشته‌اند. خیام در جایی ابن سینا را استاد خود می‌داند، اما این استادی ابن سینا، جنبهٔ معنوی دارد.

Recently declassified records… confirm that beginning on November 30, 1948, [CIA operative Stephen] Meade met secretly with Colonel Zaim at least six times to discuss the “possibility [of an] army supported dictatorship.” [“Cold War and Covert Action: The United States and Syria, 1945-1958,” Middle East Journal, Winter 1990, p. 55]

As early as 1949, this newly independent Arab republic was an important staging ground for the CIA’s earliest experiments in covert action.
The CIA secretly encouraged a right-wing military coup in 1949.

The reason the U.S. initiated the coup?  Little explains:

 In late 1945, the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) announced plans to construct the Trans-Arabian Pipe Line (TAPLINE) from Saudi Arabia to the Mediterra- nean. With U.S. help, ARAMCO secured rights-of-way from Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.  The Syrian right-of-way was stalled in parliament.

Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro” is one of the finest documentaries I have ever seen—I would have stayed in the theater in New York to see the film again if the next showing had not been sold out. The newly released film powerfully illustrates, through James Baldwin’s prophetic work, that the insanity now gripping the United States is an inevitable consequence of white Americans’ steadfast failure to confront where they came from, who they are and the lies and myths they use to mask past and present crimes. Baldwin’s only equal as a 20th century essayist is George Orwell. If you have not read Baldwin you probably do not fully understand America. Especially now.

History “is not the past,” the film quotes Baldwin as saying. “History is the present. We carry our history with us. To think otherwise is criminal.”

Double Standards: Where Were the Liberal Protestors During Obama’s Wars?

The election of Donald Trump has sent millions of people pouring out onto the streets to protest a man they think is a racist, misogynist, xenophobic bully who will destroy US democracy in his quest to establish himself as supreme fascist ruler of the country.
Maybe they’re right. Maybe Trump is a fascist who will destroy America. But where were these people when Obama was bombing wedding parties in Kandahar, or training jihadist militants to fight in Syria, or abetting NATO’s destructive onslaught on Libya, or plunging Ukraine into fratricidal warfare, or collecting the phone records of innocent Americans, or deporting hundreds of thousands of undocumented workers, or force-feeding prisoners at Gitmo, or providing bombs and aircraft to the Saudis to continue their genocidal war against Yemen?
Where were they?

On the day President Trump is inaugurated, thousands of writers in the United States will express their indignation.  “In order for us to heal and move forward …,” say Writers Resist, “we wish to bypass direct political discourse, in favour of an inspired focus on the future, and how we, as writers, can be a unifying force for the protection of democracy.”

And:  “We urge local organizers and speakers to avoid using the names of politicians or adopting ‘anti’ language as the focus for their Writers Resist event. It’s important to ensure that nonprofit organizations, which are prohibited from political campaigning, will feel confident participating in and sponsoring these events.”

Thus, real protest is to be avoided, for it is not tax exempt.

For students of official propaganda, manipulation of public opinion, psychological conditioning, and emotional coercion, it doesn’t get much better than this. As Trump and his army of Goldman Sachs guys, corporate CEOs, and Christian zealots slouch toward inauguration day, we are being treated to a master class in coordinated media manipulation that is making Goebbels look like an amateur. This may not be immediately apparent, given the seemingly risible nature of most of the garbage we are being barraged with, but once one understands the actual purpose of such official propaganda, everything starts to make more sense.

Christopher Norrie, commander of the 3rd Armoured Brigade Combat Team, declared: “The main goal of our mission is deterrence and prevention of threats.” Apparently, the colonel is not sufficiently bright to realize that far from preventing threats, the force he is leading presents as a threat. And to no less a military power than Russia.
