A new Harris Poll shows 60% of US Gen Z support Hamas over Israel, highlighting a generational divide as Gaza’s death toll nears 63,400 amid the ongoing genocide.
A new poll shows a striking generational divide in US attitudes toward the war on Gaza, with 60% of Generation Z respondents (ages 18–24) expressing support for Palestinian resistance group Hamas over Israel.
The survey, conducted by The Harris Poll and HarrisX between Aug. 20–21 among 2,025 registered voters, asked: “In the Israel-Hamas conflict, do you support more Israel or more Hamas?”
While older demographics favored Israel — 65% among ages 25–34, 70% among 35–44, 74% among 45–54, 84% among 55–64, and 89% among those 65 and older – a decisive majority of young respondents sided with Hamas.
The findings also showed voters evenly split (50–50) on whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
The majority of respondents (51%) said criticism of Israel stems from concern over Palestinian human rights, rather than antisemitism.
Analysts say the results, released this week, reflect a major shift in American public opinion as Israel’s offensive in Gaza continues.
Ongoing Genocide
Since reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, Israel has continued its bloody aerial bombardment across the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians.
Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 63,000 Palestinians, with more than 160,000 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.
In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.
Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.
