Australia: ‘Sorry’ for One Genocide but Complicity in Another
PALESTINE CHRONICLE: Australia’s royal commission into antisemitism opens a window into numerous paradoxes and contradictions. The first paradox is of a government that routinely says ‘sorry’ for the genocide of Australia’s indigenous people while maintaining close diplomatic, strategic and corporate relations with a genocidal state.
Like Australia, the state of Israel is a colonial settler state. Perhaps the common background helps to explain the affinity.
Australia has ratified the UN genocide convention of 1948, which obliges signatories to prevent and punish the crime of genocide. Australia has done neither. By late 2023 it was clear that Israel was already committing genocide in Gaza, leaving aside the questions of the West Bank and of Gaza being a subunit of a genocide already begun in 1948.
Far from condemning Israel, Australia celebrates the relationship between the two governments. On its web page, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), behind the facade of commitment to a two-state solution and Palestinian statehood, neither of which are even remotely on the agenda, remarks on Australia’s “warm and close relations with Israel” as well as the strong bilateral cooperation with it “in recent years. ”
This “engagement” has increased across a range of sectors, including “security and defense.” This includes spare parts Australia produces for Israel’s F35 jet fighters and multi-million dollar contracts with Israeli arms manufacturers. Scores of contracts have remained active despite the genocide while manufacturers of the technologies and weapons used in the genocide are allowed to market their goods in Australia.
DFAT highlights Australia’s cooperation with Israel on “national security, ” defense and cyber security.
