Iran breaks ground on ‘world's largest’ solar plant to tackle energy deficit

Iran is set to begin construction on a 5,000-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Isfahan province, backed by a $2.8 billion, privately financed development that officials say will be the “largest solar facility” anywhere in the world, WANA reported on 18 August.
Ebrahim Karimi, who heads the energy desk at the Isfahan Governor's Office, said ground would be broken on the site in the near future.
The site chosen is Kuhpayeh, just east of Isfahan, where the installation will span roughly 6,000 hectares, with the construction work to be divided into three phases, the first two packages carrying 2,000 MW apiece and the third 1,000 MW.
Iran’s grid has struggled to keep pace with demand, a longstanding problem exacerbated by chronic underinvestment, sanctions, extreme summer heat, and damage caused by the US-Israeli war on Iran.
The Islamic Parliament Research Center calculated this year's shortfall at peak summer consumption at 13.6 gigawatts (GW), and officials argue that an additional 5 GW drawn from the sun could bring outages down by roughly half.
Isfahan Governor Mehdi Jamalinejad has said the completed facility would be “the world's largest solar power plant,” a title currently held by India's Bhadla Solar Park.
Iranian officials say the Isfahan development would surpass the leading sites in India and China in installed capacity and put the plant's eventual output at nearly a tenth of the electricity Iran consumes in a month.
Recurring shortages have pushed Tehran to widen its renewable capacity in recent years, with solar taking on a larger share of the energy mix.
The Isfahan plant would count among the heaviest renewable investments Iran has made and would place it among the leading builders of utility-scale solar worldwide.
The US-Israeli war on Iran has accelerated a shift in the country’s energy planning, with strikes damaging gas fields, fuel-storage and petrochemical facilities, power plants, transmission lines, and other electricity infrastructure, disrupting gas and generation capacity while exposing the vulnerability of Iran’s already strained grid.
In late May, Iranian engineers restored the South Pars industrial hub to its pre-war output in under a month after teams cleared debris, rebuilt damaged sections, and upgraded the utility and raw material pipelines feeding the petrochemical zone.
The complex was hit in April in a joint US-Israeli attack, the second strike on the hub after an earlier wave in March damaged gas and petrochemical facilities along the same corridor, part of a campaign aimed at crippling Iran's capacity to sustain its economy through the war.
US President Donald Trump warned in July that Iran's power plants and bridges could be struck if Tehran did not return to talks with Washington, holding civilian infrastructure hostage to negotiations.
