Hossein Taeb, head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-linked (IRGC) volunteer paramilitary group, the Basij, said the waterway is “under Iran’s control and management,” according to Fars News Agency.
The official went on to say that Washington was seeking to disrupt Iran’s popularity in the region by creating a new war in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Today you see that the Strait of Hormuz is under the management and control of the Islamic Republic.” He stressed Tehran would continue to prioritize its security.
“The US has long miscalculated due to intelligence failures. Case in point: The war on Iran. Now, an even bigger miscalculation on the Strait of Hormuz. Worse than fake news is fake intelligence. Be careful. Allah is Great, Greater than ANY power on Earth. In Allah we trust,” Araghchi said.
On Wednesday, Trump claimed on social media that the US was fully controlling the Strait of Hormuz.
The US has “total control over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said, adding, “I THINK WE WILL KEEP IT!”
“Our Naval Blockade is being called, by everyone, ‘A WALL OF STEEL,’ and there is nothing Iran can do about it. They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, their remaining soldiers are unpaid, the IRGC is decimated and fleeing, and their ‘Leadership’ is uncertain, at best!” Trump claimed.
“They have No Money – Their country is ‘shot.’ All they have is FAKE NEWS and 300 percent INFLATION, and getting worse! Iran is all talk and no action, the Bully of the Middle East No Longer,” he added.
The Islamic Republic recently announced that it has reached a deal with Oman on joint management of the strait.
It says, however, that Washington has tried to obstruct Tehran–Muscat talks, while also rejecting US claims that Tehran is negotiating directly with Washington.
In June, Washington agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that set out several points to build on in future talks – including some form of reparations or a fund for the destruction caused by the illegal US-Israeli war on Iran.
Another key point of the MoU is a joint Iranian–Omani Hormuz management mechanism, without US involvement but possibly with cooperation from regional states.
A 60-day de-escalation period involving a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and lifting of the now reimposed US blockade was meant to commence after the Islamabad memorandum MoU was announced in June.
Yet Washington began violating the understanding immediately. Iran retaliated repeatedly, prompting more deadly US strikes and harsher retaliatory operations by Tehran.
Last month, Washington renewed heavy bombardment of Iran for weeks.
Tehran responded with heavy and destructive attacks on US military bases across the region, inflicting heavy casualties on US troops.
The US president recently paused his campaign, claiming mediators were requesting de-escalation.
US media reports said that the pause came after the military advised Trump that the strikes were ineffective.
