The Apple Case Will Grope Its Way Into Your Future
Farhad Manjoo
To understand what’s
at stake in the battle between Apple and the F.B.I.over
cracking open a terrorist’s smartphone, it helps to be able to predict the
future of the tech industry.
For that, here’s one
bet you’ll never lose money on: Digital technology always grows hungrier for
more personal information, and we users nearly always accede to its demands.
Today’s smartphones hold a lot of personal data — your correspondence, your photos,
your location, your dignity. But tomorrow’s devices, many of which are already
around in rudimentary forms, will hold a lot more.

The Washington Post Just Published Probably the Most Inaccurate Editorial on Bernie's Campaign So Far
By Adam Johnson / AlterNet
January 28, 2016
The Washington Post has been on something of an anti-Sanders kick lately. Its latest editorial, Bernie Sanders’s fiction-filled campaign, is somehow worse than its last one, which derided his single-payer plan in tabloid-like terms. It's entirely predictable that an establishment gatekeeper publication like The Post would not approve of Sanders' relatively radical policy proposals, but the degree to which it keeps offering up hysterical, and often times totally disingenuous critiques, is surprising even by its standards. Let's begin with The Post's first claim:
Mr. Sanders’s tale starts with the bad guys: Wall Street and corporate money. The existence of large banks and lax campaign finance laws explains why working Americans are not thriving, he says, and why the progressive agenda has not advanced. Here is a reality check: Wall Street has already undergone a round of reform, significantly reducing the risks big banks pose to the financial system.

A Message from Congressman Swalwell- and Response
It is difficult to find an honest politician who tells people the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Of course it is not impossible to find one (Bernie Sanders is a good example), but unfortunately they are rare and subject to change. The reason that they can be so outright dishonest is that they don't believe in their constituents' intelligence. Perhaps, some of the people whom they are representing have similar character, but not all are like them, and I dare to say that the majority of people are truthful. I never voted any of the elected officials into their offices and they are representing me without getting any help from me to become an elected officials. Therefore, there is no hard feeling! However, since we they are getting paid to represent me, they have to listen to my voice as well.
When the new restriction for Iranians traveling to the US was discussed behind closed doors, with Obama promising to sign it if it passed both houses, Iranians who became aware of this through NIAC (such as myself) started calling on their senators and representatives. In my case, two of the elected officials in the state I reside did not vote for its passing. The other ones all voted for it and did not respond to my request and others who claimed the same as me. Until today, when I received a response from Congressman Swalwell, as follows:

SALT & PEPPER: CANDIDATES’ NEWS
Donald Trump revealed his support of a new group assembled to
protest certain politically motivated groups who have been marching all over
the nation in the recent months. This morning, Trump called the group he
supported as “White Lives Matter, More”, which he described to have convened as
an objection to the new anti-police protests of recent months by those he
termed as “terrorist affiliated groups”. He further defined them as a grass
roots alliance, organized with his financial backings. Trump will lead this
group in a rally which they will start next Sunday in a block on the north of
the financial district of New York City. He added that they specifically selected
Sunday as the day of their march, in order to respect working people and not to
interrupt daily business of financial district employees. In response to the
question of the possibility of other racial groups confronting them he replied,
“We have already received a permit from the City of New York for this march. We
have further asked New York police to assist us by making a ring around our
marchers with personnel at least as many as the marchers, and I personally
agreed to pay for the additional expenses the department may incur.” When asked
about the group’s philosophy he responded: “we are trying to make a point that
white Americans were the first to call this land their home by sacrificing
their lives in clearing the land off the heathens. Of course, all the newcomers
from Europe were welcomed, in order to flourish and build the land as great as
it looks today. All other groups are immigrants, and they have to live and work
under our leadership.” He concluded by saying that he had invited all major
media to cover the march.

Will the U.S. Fall for Saudi Arabia’s Deliberate Provocation in Killing of Shi’ite Cleric?
By Trita Parsi
January 05, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - There should be little doubt that Saudi Arabia wanted to escalate regional tensions into a crisis by executing Shi’ite cleric Nimr al-Nimr. On the same day, Riyadh also unilaterally withdrew from the ceasefire agreement in Yemen. By allowing protestors to torch the Saudi embassy in Tehran in response, Iran seems to have walked right into the Saudi trap. If Saudi Arabia succeeds in forcing the United States into the conflict by siding with the kingdom, then its objectives will have been met.

Military to Military
Seymour M. Hersh on US intelligence sharing in the Syrian War
Barack Obama’s
repeated insistence that Bashar al-Assad must leave office – and that
there are ‘moderate’ rebel groups in Syria capable of defeating him –
has in recent years provoked quiet dissent, and even overt opposition,
among some of the most senior officers on the Pentagon’s Joint Staff.
Their criticism has focused on what they see as the administration’s
fixation on Assad’s primary ally, Vladimir Putin. In their view, Obama
is captive to Cold War thinking about Russia and China, and hasn’t
adjusted his stance on Syria to the fact both countries share
Washington’s anxiety about the spread of terrorism in and beyond Syria;
like Washington, they believe that Islamic State must be stopped.
The military’s resistance dates back to the summer of 2013, when a
highly classified assessment, put together by the Defense Intelligence
Agency (DIA) and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, then led by General Martin
Dempsey, forecast that the fall of the Assad regime would lead to chaos
and, potentially, to Syria’s takeover by jihadi extremists, much as was
then happening in Libya. A former senior adviser to the Joint Chiefs
told me that the document was an ‘all-source’ appraisal, drawing on
information from signals, satellite and human intelligence, and took a
dim view of the Obama administration’s insistence on continuing to
finance and arm the so-called moderate rebel groups. By then, the CIA
had been conspiring for more than a year with allies in the UK, Saudi
Arabia and Qatar to ship guns and goods – to be used for the overthrow
of Assad – from Libya, via Turkey, into Syria. The new intelligence
estimate singled out Turkey as a major impediment to Obama’s Syria
policy. The document showed, the adviser said, ‘that what was started as
a covert US programme to arm and support the moderate rebels fighting
Assad had been co-opted by Turkey, and had morphed into an
across-the-board technical, arms and logistical programme for all of the
opposition, including Jabhat al-Nusra and Islamic State. The so-called
moderates had evaporated and the Free Syrian Army was a rump group
stationed at an airbase in Turkey.’ The assessment was bleak: there was
no viable ‘moderate’ opposition to Assad, and the US was arming
extremists.

HR158
Apparently, the new bill, HR158, has puzzled
many Iranians. Those who are familiar with the politics of American government
understand that this bill is consistent with other government policies, and
they can find many other historical instances. Many Iranians, such as the
author of this article, have selected the United States as the country of their
citizenship, because of the democratic values this country is famous for,
through mass media, movies, and international broadcasting systems. The longer
one becomes accustomed to the culture of American society, the more one discovers
a brand of nationalism mixed with some self-righteousness and racism that has
become the fabric of the American society. Children from early school age are
indoctrinated into this type of nationalism.

What Donald Trump and ISIS Have in Common- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
What Donald Trump and ISIS Have in Common
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar @kaj33 Dec. 9, 2015
TIME columnist Abdul-Jabbar is a six-time NBA champion and league Most Valuable Player. He is also a celebrated author, filmmaker and education ambassador whose life and career are the subject of Minority of One, a new documentary on HBO Sports.
The 2016 candidate has more in common with the terrorist group than he does with America
The terrorist campaign against American ideals is winning. Fear is rampant. Gun sales are soaring. Hate crimes are increasing. Bearded hipsters are being mistaken for Muslims. And 83 percent of voters believe a large-scale terrorist attack is likely here in the near future. Some Americans are now so afraid that they are willing to trade in the sacred beliefs that define America for some vague promises of security from the very people who are spreading the terror. “Go ahead and burn the Constitution — just don’t hurt me at the mall.” That’s how effective this terrorism is.
I’m not talking about ISIS. I’m talking about Donald Trump.

Is this the next stage of anti-abortion violence in America?
Posted: 11/29/2015 09:16 AM EST | Edited: 11/29/2015 11:04 AM EST
A gunman opened fire in a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado
Springs, Colorado, on Friday, the latest in a string of attacks at the
health care provider's clinics this year.
Robert Lewis Dear, 57, who surrendered to authorities after an hourslong standoff, appears to
have been motivated by opposition to abortion. Abortion clinics have
long been the targets of violence, including bombings, anthrax scares
and mass blockades. This year alone, arsonists attacked four Planned
Parenthood clinics in Washington, California, Illinois and Louisiana.
