Remembering the Rosenbergs

Seventy years later, the lessons of their politically motivated state executions are as relevant as ever.
Jun 19, 2023
On that June 19th evening in 1953, I was a small kid in a suburb of Philadelphia, concerned above all with baseball, when I noticed that something had made my parents very upset. When I asked them what was wrong, they informed me that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg had been killed in the electric chair, in a place called Sing Sing in New York, and that it was a horrible injustice.

Report Details Intensifying Police Crackdown on US Journalists Covering Protests

"The inadequacy of press freedom protections was starkly exposed during the Trump administration, when some of the largest street protests in American history took place," according to a new report.
Jun 20, 2023
In recent years, particularly since former Republican President Donald Trump took office in 2017, U.S. police have failed to uphold basic constitutional rights for journalists covering rallies and other protests, a new report from the Knight First Amendment Institute said Tuesday, with the study documenting a number of physical attacks, unjust arrests, and suppression tactics used by police at protests both large and small.

Jun 18, 2023
Although the average Social Security benefit is a relatively modest $1,835 per month for retired workers, as of April 2023, it's nevertheless a vital source of income for the vast majority of seniors.

No Choice but to Indict Trump: Why a Gentlemen’s Agreement Had to be Broken

June 16, 2023
Special federal Trump prosecutor Jack Smith looks stern, anxious, and less than happy as he goes about his duties of indicting the United States’ forty-fifth president, the first actual fascist (see my book This Happened Here on the Trump presidency and world view) to sit in the White House.

Notes from the Editors

Much of the impact of Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy’s now-classic work Monopoly Capital when it was published in 1966, at the very height of the Vietnam War, can be attributed to its chapter on “Absorption of the Surplus: Militarism and Imperialism.”

Where Imagination Lives in Your Brain

The ability to conjure up possible futures or alternative realities is the flip side of memory. Both faculties cohabit in the brain region called the hippocampus
June 8, 2023
Henry Molaison, known for years as “H.M.,” was famously unable to form new memories. If someone he had met left the room only to return several minutes later, he would greet that person again as if for the first time. Because of surgery to treat intractable epilepsy, H M. lacked a sea-horse-shaped brain structure called the hippocampus and had amnesia. His case helped establish the hippocampus as an engine of memory.

A War Long Wanted: Diplomatic Malpractice in Ukraine

June 9, 2023
Author’s Note: This is the original draft of the letter to President Biden and the US Congress published in The New York Times on May 16 by the Eisenhower Media Network. This version, which is substantially longer than the published letter, is published here amended from its original formatting as a group letter. This version goes into much greater depth on the background of Russia’s invasion, the role of the military-industrial complex and the fossil fuel industry in US policy-making, and speaks to the toxic and dangerous diplomatic malpractice that has dominated US foreign policy since the end of the Cold War.
