War on Gaza Crystalizes Israel’s Image

Yakov M. Rabkin

August 29, 2024

Russia in Global Affairs ) – Modern Israel attracts much attention from analysts and the public but our ability to understand it is hindered by ideology, prejudice, and myth. Many tread carefully when discussing Israel lest they be accused of antisemitism. In an earlier article, I explained what distinguishes anti-Zionism from antisemitism. However, the fundamental difficulty lies in the habitual association of the state in Western Asia with the Jews. Should we view those who inhabit and govern Israel as Jews or have they become something else — namely, Israelis?

ALERT: Kamala Harris Is Kamal Aroush! Tim Walz Has A Fake Dog! Buy Scraps of Trump Debate Suit! Make It Stop!

Abby Zimet

August 28, 2024

In this hallucinatory election year, how weird can things get? Weird. Among the lunatic slings and arrows being tossed at Dems in hopes something sticks: The claim Walz is a serial-lying, horse-semen-drinking Great Replacement zealot, Harris is a child-trafficking, sexually-servicing trans man named Kamal Aroush, and it'll all be okay if you buy fabric-bedecked trading cards from a grifting crackpot who wants to start a "Space National Guard." At this point sure, why not.

This was the first step in the army’s invasion and campaign of destruction in Deir al-Balah, the last town that has not been completely leveled throughout the war.

‘The polio vaccine is effective, but delivering it requires a ceasefire’

Ruwaida Kamal Amer

August 27, 2024

For 25 years, the Gaza Strip was free of polio. No longer. Earlier this month, the health ministry reported that a 10-month-old baby had contracted the disease; a week later, he was paralyzed. This came after polio virus had been detected in sewage samples from six locations in the cities of Deir Al-Balah and Khan Younis.

Why Poverty Reduction Under Capitalism is a Myth

Richard D. Wolff

August 27, 2024

From its beginnings, the capitalist economic system produced both critics and celebrants, those who felt victimized and those who felt blessed. Where victims and critics developed analyses, demands, and proposals for change, beneficiaries, and celebrants developed alternative discourses defending the system.

Palestinian Baby in Gaza Paralyzed by Polio, as Israel Rejects UN Ceasefire Call to allow Vaccinations

Juan Cole

August 24, 2024

Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) – Julian Borger at The Guardian reports that the first verified case of type 2 poliovirus in 25 years in Gaza, in a baby, has resulted in the paralysis of the infant. It is only the first of many if the UN is not allowed to administer vaccines to 650,000 children in the Strip, which will definitely require a ceasefire. The Israeli authorities are refusing to consider this step.

Partners in genocide: Israel is slaughtering Palestinians with Western arms

Ramzy Baroud

August 23, 2024

While many are earnestly pointing at the devastation of war, the rampant human rights violations and the deliberate relegation of international and humanitarian law, there are those who see war from an entirely different perspective: profits.

Farage and Musk don’t care about free speech. And Israel really is a terrorist state

Martin Jay

August 22, 2024

In the space of just one week there has been a massive, almost Orwellian crackdown on free speech, with a number of arrests made. Not in North Korea or China but in the USA and UK. Barely days after former UN weapons inspector and social media tsar Scott Ritter had his house raided by FBI officers looking for evidence that he was actually working for America’s enemies we witnessed the arrest and detention of a young British journalist called Richard Medhurst who, when arriving at Heathrow airport from overseas, was escorted off a plane and held on terrorism charges. And then remarkably, Elon Musk, a billionaire who owns X and claims to be a champion of free speech shuts down the account of Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef – which is followed by rumours on social media that the next polemic commentator to get the chop will be the YouTube talk show hosted by Judge Andrew Napolitano.

Israel Is Holding Thousands of Palestinians Captive — Including Children

Arvind Dilawar

August 20, 2024

In October 2023, Fadiah Barghouti’s home in Ramallah was raided by Israeli forces. Soldiers broke down her door and smashed everything that they could get their hands on. They were searching for her son Basel, whom they beat along with her other son, saying they would all “pay the price for supporting Hamas.” It was a claim Barghouti was familiar with: Her husband Mahmoud is currently being held in an Israeli prison for the same unsubstantiated charge, as he has been on and off for 10 of the last 30 years.

In Gaza, Israel’s dehumanization of the Palestinians has reached a new height

MR

August 20, 2024

The Israel Defense Forces has decided to downsize the Oketz unit, Unit 7142, ahead of its cancellation. The unit for dogs and their trainers has been suffering from a shortage recently. Quite a number of dogs have been killed in the Gaza Strip, and it was therefore decided to use cheaper, more efficient means. It turns out that the new unit, which has yet to be given a name by the IDF computer, brings the same operational results. There’s no need to train dogs for months, no need for the iron muzzles that shut their frightening jaws, and their food will be cheaper,pp too: Instead of expensive Bonzo dog food, leftovers from battle rations.

Remembering a Democratic Iran under Mosaddegh, which the US Overthrew

Fariba Amini

August 20, 2024

Newark, Del. (Special to Informed Comment) – When I was very young, in my early teens, I remember that we always had radio Iraq on. I remember that my parents and especially my father used to listen to it on his German Grundig radio. At that time, I didn’t really understand or grasp much. As a teenager, I cared about boys and fun stuff. Then I grew up and I became aware.

خسرو گلسرخی
