How to Manipulate!

I had some classmates in high school who would do anything to make fun of the teachers and administrators. Some people have a good sense of finding weaknesses in others. The combination of this and some boldness and the desire to be known courageous, would be the engine behind making fun of the authorities and playing sarcastic games with them. A group of students would sometimes conspire against a teacher, just to make them look ridiculous. If a teacher confessed that he had strong feelings towards something, he would have been doomed forever! For instance, we had a teacher (who professed casually while lecturing) that he hated garlic. From the following day until the end of the school year, the word garlic was written on the board in different ways and styles. There were various graffiti of garlic on the walls of the classroom, and sometimes fresh garlic cloves were sitting on a desk in his class! On their papers, some students would find a way to mention the word garlic or somehow refer to it! Of course, the teacher would act his part as well, by showing unpleasant reactions to the word or the presence of garlic. The teacher thought that he had the upper hand as far as students' grades were concerned. He was in fact the victim in this story. Students would move to higher grades with different teacheres the following year, but the mentioned teacher would always be left with a bad name. He could never rest, since the same game would be repeated the following school year. Finding redicule on others is not hard. How the one has been the target reacts to it is important.

اسلام بار دیگر در خطر افتاد!

چندی پیش شخصی‌ در روزنامه اینترنتی ایرانیان در مورد دخالت آمریکا و اقمار غربیش در لیبی‌ و سوریه نوشته ای داشت. بر کسی‌ پوشیده نیست که پس از تجربه آنچه که به بهار عربی‌ عنوان گرفت، آمریکا تصمیم گرفت که در سرکوب جنبش هایی که در کشور های محافظ آمریکا نضج می‌گیرد، مانند یمن و بحرین، بطور مستقیم یا از طریق جیره خوارانش در منطقه، از جمله عربستان و امارات، دخالت کند. از آنطرف چنان که جنبشی در کشوری که منافع آمریکا را بدون قید و شرط حمایت نمیکند بر انگیخته شود (عموما رژیم‌های استبدادی، که متاسفانه سیاست رایج خاور میانه است، مانند لیبی‌ و سوریه)، سیاست آمریکا بر این پایه قرار گرفت که با دخالت دادن عناصر از پیش پرورانده شده، مثل القاعده، برای به دست گرفتن این جنبش ها از هیچ کمکی‌ چه پولی‌ و چه نظامی و تا پیروزی کامل، ابایی نداشته باشد. جالب اینکه نوشته این شخص در قسمت نظریات روزنامه ایرانیان صد در صد کوبیده شد و همه نویسنده را عامل جمهوری اسلامی معرفی‌ کردند. هنوز عده‌ای تشخیص نمیدهند که رژیم اسلامی ایران و یا کارداران آن مجبور هستند که لحن ضّد غربی خود را حفظ کنند. و در بسیاری از موارد، سخن آنها دور از واقعیت نیست.

What Day?!

Labor Day is known as May Day, which is the first day of month of May every year and in most of the western countries. However, in the US, the first Monday in September (and this year it is September 3^rd) is Labor Day. Celebration of this day is becoming more ridiculous every year, as the labor becomes more disfranchised and less appreciated every year, and jobs for the labor gets more scares by day.

به تازگی فرصتی به دست آمد تا این کتاب دکتر ناصر انقطاع را مطالعه کنم. البته ایشان کتابهای متعددی نوشته‌ا‌ند، ولی‌ کتاب مورد بحث در موضوع با دیگران تفاوت بسیاری دارد. کتاب “در ژرفای واژه‌ها ”به فصلهای کوتاهی‌ تقسیم بندی شده که مطالعه آنرا برای کسانی‌ که فرصت و یا حوصله مطالعه مطالب طولانی‌ را ندارند تسهیل می‌کند. هر فصل به یک مقالهٔ کوتاه روزنامه‌ای میماند که بدون هیچ حاشیه روی و اتلاف وقت، مطلب مربوط به سر فصل را میشکافد و بررسی می‌کند. البته گاهی یک مطلب بارها تاکید و تکرار میشود، که کسانی‌ که با برنامه های تلویزیونی ایشان آشنایی دارند میدانند که این روشِ اوست که مطلب را از چند گوشه بررسی، و با مثالهای متفاوت و تکرار مطلب سعی می‌کند که موضوع مورد نظرش کاملا در ذهن مخاطب جانشین شود.

Next President

Every four years the old saying among progressives is repeated: "we have to select between the bad and the worse again!" This is true, because candidates are screened by a small group (whose support is essential for a candidate but they are not for ordinary people) before they enter the last round, which is the competition between bad and worse.

تاریخ دنیادر۱۰۰قطعه‌

نیل مک‌گرگور، سرپرست موزه بریتانیا صد قلم از آثار موجود در موزه را انتخاب و از طریق آنها داستان تاریخ انسان را در کتابی‌ با همین عنوان بازگو کرده است. بر طبق دیباچه، یک سریال تلویزیونی از طرف بی‌بی‌سی با همین عنوان و موضوع تهیه شده بود، و او تصمیم گرفت که کتابی‌ به عنوان همراه سریال تلویزیونی بنویسد. او میگوید که برای تهیه فیلم، تهیه کننده در خواست کرد که ۱۰۰ شئی‌ مختلف از موزه انتخاب شود. این اشیأ علاوه بر جلوه گری هنریشان میباید از نقاط مختلف دنیا و از زمانهای مختلف انتخاب میشدند که بتوانند تاریخ وسیع تری را بیان کنند. نویسنده همین روش را در کتاب بکار برده است. او کتابش را به بیست قسمت تقسیم کرده، و در هر قسمت پنج شئی‌ را مورد مطالعه قرار داده، که هر شئی‌ فصل مستقلی از آن قسمت است. نه تنها هر قسمتی‌ موضوع خاصی‌ را در بر می‌گیرد، بلکه هر فصلی قطعه‌ای را که در زمان و مکان متفاوتی است بازگو می‌کند، که این اشیأ فقط در موضوع آن قسمت مشترک هستند. بیست قسمت این کتاب بطور زنجیر وار به یک دیگر چسبیده ا‌ند، که از زمانهای بسیار دور آغاز و تا زمان انتشار این کتاب (۲۰۱۰) پایان میابند. نویسنده سعی می‌کند که موضوعات متنوعی را که تلاش بشریت برای بهبود را در طول زمان و در مکانهای مختلف نمایانگر است در این تاریخ بگنجاند. خواندن این کتاب از آغاز تا پایان مانند این است که شخصی‌ از دورترین زمانی‌ که گنجینه های تاریخی‌از آن ایام در دست میباشند، تا به امروز در تونل زمان سفر میکند. تعدادی از این اشیا با تاریخ ایران مرتبط هستند، و بدین دلیل، بیشترفصلهائی که مربوط به ایران هستند در اینجا بررسی میشوند.

Theories of Humanity

There are two schools of thought: inclusive and exclusive. The inclusive way of thinking assumes that all human beings are the same with regards to their mental capacity, hopes, fears, wishes, and social interactions. The difference is in the community, where one is raised and is accustomed to its way of life. The other school of thought believes in exclusion and assumes that everyone is different, and all characteristics are unique to each person. According to this mode of thinking, a person can be inherently active or lazy or smart or stupid or sociable or unsociable. These two schools of thought are on two opposite spectrum of envisioning humanity in general, views which are shared by small extremist minority. Beliefs of the rest of the population of the world are somewhere between these two extremes.

A History of the World in 100 Objects

Neil MacGregor, director of the British Museum selected hundred objects from the museum and discussed each object in a separate chapter of a book with the above title.“Telling history through things is what museums are for.” According to the preface, the book is based on a series of programs on BBC radio broadcasted in 2010. The director of the program asked for selection of hundred objects that would have been collected to represent the earliest time in history all the way to present day (2010). The objects were supposed to be artistic like most of the objects in a museum, while dealing with everyday life that reflect many aspects of human experience. The objects were also supposed to have been collected from many different parts of the world, as varied in range as possible. Neil MacGregor followed the same idea in the book. He divided his book into twenty parts, each part discussing a separate subject matter through five objects, each object representing a chapter. These book, from beginning to the end, take us also through a time period, from two million years ago to two years ago. He tries to cover a variety of subjects which not only present human endeavor, strife, and progress through time, but also societies in different parts of the world and in selected periods. For someone who is interested in history, the slices of time selected are like traveling through time and stopping in certain period and at certain locations.

رنگها

نژادهای دنیا بر اساس رنگ پوست به شش دسته تقسیم شده ا‌ند؛ سپید، سیاه، سرخ، زیتونی، زرد، و قهوه‌ای. البته تمام این رنگها به غیر از رنگ نخست را رنگین پوست مینامند، مانند اینکه بگویند که سپید رنگ نیست. در حقیقت از نظر علمی‌ آنچه رنگ نامیده نمی‌شود سیاه است، که طبق تعریف؛ سیاه عدم وجود رنگ است. چرا که این رنگ هر نوری را جذب می‌کند و چون از آن نوری منعکس نمی‌شود طیفی از نور بر نمیگردد که تشکیل رنگ بدهد. عامل اصلی‌ تغییر رنگ پوست ملنین نام دارد. ملنین با جذب تابش نور خورشید از پوست محافظت می‌کند. بر اساس مطالعه دیرین شناسان، حدود یک میلیون و نیم سال پیش به دلیل خشکسالی شدید جنگلها تبدیل به صحاری شدند و بشر اولیه (همینیدس) با از دست دادن موی بدن خود، بالاجبار پوستش در زیر تابش نور بیش از اندازه UV-B (تابش زیاد اشعه ماورأ بنفش) دریافت کرد. حدود پنج میلیون سال پیش زمانی‌ که انسان از شمپانزه منشعب شد، پوست بدن انسان سپید و در زیر انبوه مو مخفی‌ بود. بر اثر تعرق و تهویهٔ پوست، موی بدن کم کم ریزش کرد و پوست برای دفاع از خود به تیرگی گرائید. تیرگی پوست به رنگ پوست افریقائی تبارها در آمد و تا بیشتر از یک میلیون سال پیش این رنگِ قالبِ پوستِ انسان بود. بین هفتاد تا صد هزار سال پیش گروهی به سمت شمال که تابش آفتاب ملایم تر بود مهاجرت کرده، به منظور حفظ بدن در مقابل سرما پوشش و لباس را اختراع و در نتیجه پوست بدن آنها نیز به رنگ روشن تری تغییر پیدا کرد. این بود تاریخچه مختصری از رنگ پوست که امروزه (و از قرنها پیش) دلیلی‌ برای برتری نژادی شمرده میشود.

The Enigma of Capital

“The Enigma of Capital and the Crises of Capitalism” is the title of a book by David Harvey. This book explains the intricate nature of capital in relation to what has brought our economy down to the present situation. Chapters of the book are divided into phases of capitalism starting with a brief anatomy of the events of 2006 (disruption) with a series of charts and graphs. It reflects different aspects of the economy from wages and salaries to home ownership to debt bubble, for different time ranges and for several countries in comparison with the US. It continues to explain how the capital is assembled, how it goes to work and to market, and how it evolves. Then, it describes the geography of capitalism and how it destructs the environment, and finally it ends with “what is to be done and who is going to do it”.

در جستجوی حقیقت

افراد و سازمانهائی که در انقلاب سال ۵۷ ایران شرکت کردند در یک هدف مشترک بودند و آن آزادی بیان عقیده بود. در پیرو این هدف، خواسته آنها رهائی کشور از وابستگی به غرب بود. گر چه کشور ایران به دلیل ۱۴ قرن سیطره اسلام به اعتقادات مذهبی‌ پایبند بود ولی‌ هیچگاه نفوذ و رهبری اسلام هدف انقلاب نبود. در حقیقت بجز طرفداران‌ خمینی و لیبرالهای مذهبی‌ کسی‌ از کمبود قوانین اسلامی در کشور گله و یا شکایتی نداشت. ولی‌ چنان که میدانیم، مذهبیون انقلاب را از همان نخست از هدف اصلی‌، یعنی آزادی عقیده منحرف کردند. آمریکا که از ابتدا با هوشیاری به انقلاب ایران توجه داشت، شاه را در این بازی‌ سیاسی بازنده میدید و همّ خود را مصروف حمایت از اسلامیون کرد، چرا که میدانست که اسلامیها بهتر می‌توانستند اهداف آمریکا را که از ریشه بر انداختن چپ و ملی‌ گراها بود دنبال کنند. شعار انقلاب که استقلال و آزادی بود همچنان توسط طرفداران خمینی تکرار شد، و زمانی‌ که او رهبری جنبش را به دست گرفت، جمهوری اسلامی را به این شعار چسباندند. ولی‌ همچنان به مخالفت با امپریالیست جهانی‌ شعار دادند، و این ترفند، چپ را دچار سر در گمی کرد. جنبش چپ میدانست که حکومت مذهبی‌ را نمیخواست ولی‌ نمیتوانست با ادعاهای ضد امپریالیستی آنها مخالفت کند. سازمانهای چپ بدین ترتیب دو پاره و سه پاره شدند و به سهولت توسط حکومت مذهبی‌ متلاشی گردیدند.

MORE WAR!

Can we make a relationship between the followings: incessant increase in federal deficit since the beginning of this century, war, austerity measures, obliteration of the first amendment, conglomeration of media. In addition, we can compare it with ethnic events of the past few days such as the murder of innocent people in Afghanistan on a rampage and “Old West” style gun slinging of a vigilante ending by killing a black man “who looked suspicious” and killing of an Arab immigrant with a racial note?

در “الکامل فی‌ التاریخ” یا تاریخ ابن اثیر آمده است که: “مردی به نزد عُمَر بن خطاب آمد و گفت: تاریخی‌ پایه گذاری کنید. عُمَر گفت: تاریخ چیست؟ گفت: چیزی است که عجمان میکنند و می‌گویند در بهمان سال و بهمان ماه چنین و چنان شد. عُمَر گفت: کاری نیکوست”! در گویش پارسی‌ واژهٔ تاریخ دو معنی دارد، که هم نشانه ای و یا مقطعی از زمان است و هم نگارشِ وقایع. البته واقعه نگاری بدون دانستن زمانِ وقایع چندان درست به نظر نمیاید، و شاید به همین دلیل از این واژه برای بیان هر دو مطلب استفاده میشود. در ایران باستان، چنان که سلسله ای و گاهی پادشاه جدیدی به قدرت میرسید، تاریخ را از آن زمان آغاز میکردند، که این کارِ واقعه نگار را مشکل میساخت.  ولی چنانکه از این حکایت ابن اثیر بر میاید، بیانِ تاریخِ وقوع در نقل وقایع تاریخی‌ از سالهای بسیار دور در ایران متداول بوده است.

Nationalism

Whether it is called patriotism or nationalism, both words are used by people referring to the same meaning, in general, with nationalism depicting more of a geographical area. According to Webster Dictionary, Nationalism is: ”loyalty and devotion to a nation; especially : a sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups” and Patriotism is: “love for or devotion to one’s country”. For the purpose of this article, let us assume that patriotism and nationalism have the same general meaning of loving one’s country or nation. The question is, whether nationalism leads one to a process of racism and chauvinism, or it is the tool in pursuit of independence and democracy. Deposed kings or those who are exiled from their countries take a fistful of dirt with them to remind them of their homeland, or to get a whiff of their glorious past when they are homesick! This obviously is not nationalism, but idiocy or deceit. The odor of earth is probably different depending on the chemical compound of it, and whether it is picked up from the city ground, or outskirts, or villages, or Home Depot! One may carry with him a rock or a handcraft that is unique to his beloved society, instead. In addition, race, language, custom, tradition, climate and nature are varied in different places on earth. Different countries may have different climates, but a country may have variety of atmospheric changes in different regions. Nature may also be different in parts of a country, while people more or less adapt to the environment easily. Language and looks and attire or fashion may also be different, but one can see variety of tongues and customs and races in a multi-cultural or multi-national society, and within the same border.

نیمچه سواد

بقول مشیری، هیچ کسی‌ بدتر از آدمی‌ نیست که نیمچه سوادی دارد! اشکالِ آدمهائی که نیمچه سواد دارند این است که فکر میکنند که همه چیز را میدانند و علامه دهر هستند. بنا بر این از تدقیق و مطالعه در مورد مطالبی‌ که اطلاعات کمی‌ دارند گریزانند. نمونه بارز آن دوست صمیمی‌ من است که بیشتر از ۵۰ سال از عمرش می‌گذرد، و احتمالش کم است که تا کنون هیچ کتابی را بغیر از کتابهای درسی‌ خوانده باشد. اخبار خود را هم یا از روز نامه های اینترنتی و یا از گویندگان ماهواره های فارسی دریافت می‌کند. گر چه قبلا کمی‌ تمایلات ترقّی خواهانه داشت، از زمانی‌ که شروع به دیدن برنامهٔ یاران میبدی کرده است، افکارش در گوشه راست سیاسی به دام افتاده است. البته اشخاصی‌ چون این دوست گرامیِ من با دیدن یک برنامهٔ منحط تلویزیونی یک مرتبه تغییر جهت نمیدهند، و زمینهٔ قبلی‌ برای پناه بردن به دامانِ امنِ “راست” را همیشه داشته ا‌ند. دوست من هم نخست تمایلات مذهبی‌ داشت، چرا که خاستگاه خانوادگی‌اش مذهبی‌، و از یکی‌ از شهرهای مذهبی‌ خوزستان است. پس از کنکاشِ بسیار و مشاهده اثراتِ ویرانگرِ مذهب در ایران (که جمهوری پُر برکت اسلامی به اکثر اشخاص ماهیت مذهب، بخصوص دین ارتجاعی اسلام را بخوبی نشان داده است) زمینه مذهبی‌ او سست شد. گر چه، کماکان به حکومتِ خالی‌ از تعقل و نابود گر اسلامی ایران، بسیار بیشتر از آنچه که لیاقت داشت بار سیاسی میداد.

The Drum of War

The government owned media is beating the drum of war again. This time, the direct insult is on Syria while preparation is made for Iran to be the next in line. The history of the control of media by the US and its allies goes back to the begining of the union. However, it has never been in such total domination. From the time when people of like-minded in the Right used their money and their influence to control the media through takeovers and acquisitions, a monopoly of far Right controlled media was established. Media became the mouthpiece of conservative ideology, and Western governments banned together behind conservative agenda and established their policies on such ideologies. Taking over worldwide trade through IMF and World Bank has gained many advantages, however direct attack on other countries is the next and vital step. No one can forget the big lie of “Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction”. After Iraq attacked Kuwait, a weeping innocent little girl, went on national TV and horrified everyone by a disclosure that she witnessed Kuwaiti babies taken from incubators and thrown away by Iraqi soldiers with the intention of stealing those machines. It was discovered later that the girl was the daughter of the Kuwait consulate in Washington, and the whole story was a big fabrication. Bush’s lies about Saddam, Osama Bin Laden, and Taliban leaders sound very much like every other US president’s, who fabricated (or in some instances created) a story in order to plan a war, from the war in Hawaii and Philippines, to the war in Libya. Syria is next in line to be dismantled as a country and to be turned into rubbles by American and NATO soldiers, like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. The citizens who do not allege their alliances to the super powers will be murdered and urinated on by American and NATO soldiers. Unfortunately, in spite of all the disclosures, majority of Westerners are still fooled by their leaders, into wars. Notwithstanding, many books have been written on the subject; from Chomsky’s “Manufacturing Consent” to Parenti’s “Monopoly Media Manipulation” to Bagdikian’s “Media Monopoly”, and the one in favor of the media monopoly “The Media Monopoly Myth- How new competition is expanding our sources of information and entertainment” by Benjamin M. Compaine! But the saga of war mongers continues.

Jaafar yaghoobi, a former political prisoner in Iran, has published his prison diary that testifies the story of millions of Iranians imprisoned by a vicious, self centered, and brutal regime. The publication of this memoir coincides with the western countries’ strongest push to attack Iran, initiated by Israel. Although Yaghoobi discloses in graphic detail various ways of persecution, torture, and murder ordered by top officials in the government and conducted by their subjects, he concludes that freedom in the country can be achieved only by Iranian people and without any outside interferences:”Iran often is portrayed in the West, particularly in the United States, in a way that mainly serves the purpose of those bent on military action against Iran, whether for the destruction of Iranian nuclear facilities or for regime change engineered by the West…The millions of Iranians who flooded the streets in June 2009 to oppose the regime are perhaps the most graphic illustration of why this picture and ‘solution’ are so terribly flawed…Regime change is needed in Iran but must be done by Iranians in their own interest, in their own time, and in their own way, rather than imposed by foreign powers [page 372].
